In Christianity, followers are encouraged to emulate the life of Christ. Philippians 2:5-11 highlights ways Christ lived and how fellow Christians can live a humble and fulfilling life. The scripture confirms Jesus’s divinity that He pre-existed; however, He came to earth humbly as a commoner to save mankind. According to the scriptures, God made Jesus’s name above all names. For Christians, this confirms the power and divinity in Christ as the only way to God and salvation. In the scripture of Hebrews 1:1-3, Jesus is dignified as a conqueror of death and sin. Jesus is placed higher than the angels and seated on the right side of God. It is important for Christians that their savior or Lord they follow has access to God almighty. It is important for Christians that Jesus has the power of death and sin, so they believe their sins can be forgiven when they call on Jesus for salvation. DQ1 comment 1 Abel, Thank you for your submission. Jesus’s divinity is quite significant for Christians because as you
said, He came to save humans from sin and give mankind a way to eternal life. In the Old Testament before the birth of Jesus, the people of Israel used animals to atone for their sins. This meant that people were always going to sin and via their sinful nature, would go back to sinning and need animals to atone for their sins occasionally. The birth of Jesus and his death on the cross gave mankind the chance to ask for forgiveness of sins without sacrificing animals. Jesus became the sacrificial lamb and with His divinity, He has the power to forgive. That is why His divinity is significant in the Christian faith. DQ1 comment 2
Garrett, Thank you for your submission. I believe that Jesus’s divinity is one of the primary values of the Christian faith. Christians believe that Jesus is the only true way to God. In the Old Testament, it was believed that God spoke through his prophets and messengers, however, in the New Testament Jesus became the messenger from God. He did not only come to deliver the good news, He came to die for the sins of men and when He defeated death and ascended to Heaven, He was awarded the highest position there is to God. DQ1 comment 3
Chelsea, Thank you for your submission. It is fascinating to know that Jesus was fully man and fully God.
I mean, how can one being embody the existence of a man and a god. For His mission, He had to
be human to be able to experience the pain, suffering and death. He fully divine and did not sin while on earth as a human. Also, He conquered death which was divine. For Christians, this is fundamental to their believe system. Jesus had to be God and with the holy spirit, they form the holy trinity. DQ1 comment 4
Jesus was tempted at the end of his fasting, when one will believe He was physically weak. Satan
thought to use his physical weakness against Him, however, Jesus showed his power and the
superiority of His spirit by not giving in to these temptations. As Satan tempted Jesus using the scriptures, Jesus rebuked him with the scriptures as well. He showed that He is the son of God. Jesus needed to successfully pass the tests set by Satan himself. This was to show Jesus’s power even in his human form. DQ1 comment 5 In the end days of His life, He suffered the physical pain as humans would. As a god, Jesus still went through pain and suffering on the cross. According to Matthew 27:46, Jesus suffered mental
and emotional pains as He cried on the cross asking God why He had been forsaken. In the end, Jesus suffered death which is the ultimate suffering of humans. But like the God He is, He defeated death and rose from death. DQ 2
The parable of the prodigal son sheds light on repentance, acceptance, and unconditional love. Jesus was communicating the father’s (God) unconditional love for all his children. Some of us humans may not be perfect and sinful so we depart from the righteous path. Others come off as too sanctimonious. However, regardless of our past or present, the Father loves us all the same. If
we turn from our bad ways to him, He will take us back and accept us as we are. In the parable of the prodigal son, there is the Father who wields unconditional love for all his children. There is the eldest child who is self-righteous and sanctimonious. He is quite obedient and follows the path of his father but comes off as self-righteous. Then there is the youngest child who blew through his inheritance. He departed from the oath his father had set for him but in the end he came back remorseful and changed his ways. I relate with the prodigal son. I am not perfect but I get remorseful when I do something bad and repent from my ways. DQ2 comment 6
I am quite fascinated by the parables told by Jesus Christ. It is interesting how he put into context
his sermons or how He addressed people. It was almost as if, he spoke in idiomatic expressions. The parable of the prodigal son was about God’s unconditional love for mankind and his plan for
redemption for mankind. Jesus used characters in a family to tell the story while addressing almost every position of persons in a religion. The righteous one, the unrighteous with repentance, and the ever-loving father who is God. DQ2 comment 7
Ideally, the older was in line with visions of a “good” son. He listened and obeyed his father, walking on a path that did not go against the values of their family. However, the return of his younger brother brought a different side of him. His response to his brother's return sent him down a path of self-righteousness. He saw how their father was happy and even went ahead to kill the fattest cow for celebration and he had not been celebrated with all his good deeds. One can say he was unforgiving of his brother’s acts. He lacked mercy for his
brother who had run back home for redemption.
