Case Study Name
: Magno Filippe
Case Study Option (A, B, C, or D)
: C
Instructions
The purpose of this assignment is to apply your knowledge and deepen your learning
by responding to real life examples that you or others may face in defending the Proclamation and the eternal family
.
Your response to the case study you have chosen may be written in essay format, or you may choose to write your response as if you were speaking or writing directly to someone facing the situation described. Your response must show thought, reflection, pondering, and depth, and be presented with college-level writing skills. The following should be integrated into your response:
The gospel doctrines or principles that are involved in the case study, and how they help to clarify and give direction in addressing the situation.
Messages from scripture, the proclamation, and the course readings for the current unit of study that address the dilemma and how those messages would be helpful.
Your own suggestions and ideas about actions that would be helpful in addressing the issue.
Your response must include:
At least four references,
each from a
different talk or article
in the current course readings. These may be direct quotes or paraphrases of statements, and must include appropriate in-text citations. (See Good Writing Practices for REL 200
)
A pertinent passage from the Proclamation
A scripture
that would support your thoughts and ideas
As an option,
you may choose to use two statements from two of the most recent General Conference addresses in place of two references from the current course readings
Be sure to connect the references to your thoughts and discuss why or how the reference helps to address the situation in the case study
. These assignments help you to dig deeply into the readings for the course and to show your understanding of the content, but they are not a place to simply regurgitate what you have learned. Please have at least 50% or more of the text be your thoughts and comments. It may be helpful to bold
or use a different color of text for your references and citations. This will help you see how much of the text is from quotes and words of others and how much is your own words.
Case Study Report
In 1-2 page(s), write a response to the case study that you have chosen and that meets the requirements explained above.
1. Gospel Principles or Doctrines Involved:
The Plan of Salvation: In the grand design of God's plan, all of His children are given the opportunity to accept or reject the teachings and ordinances of the Gospel, either in this life or in the spirit world.
Baptism: An essential ordinance for entrance into the Kingdom of God.

Vicarious Work: The principle that we can perform ordinances, like baptism, on behalf of those who are deceased and did not have the chance to accept them in mortality.
2. Resources:
Proclamation: “All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and... has a divine nature and destiny” (The Family: A Proclamation to the World). This emphasizes the importance of every soul and the opportunity they deserve.
Scripture Block: 1 Corinthians 15:29 - "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?" This scripture by Paul indicates the early Christian practice of performing baptisms for the deceased.
Talks:
Doctrine of Baptism for the Dead - This would elucidate the purpose behind the doctrine, emphasizing its deep roots in early Christianity and its restorative purpose in modern times.
The Eternal Blessings of the Temple - This talk would highlight the sacred nature of temple work and how it connects families through generations.
3. Suggestions for Resolution:
Study Together: Engage in a personal study session with your friend, focusing on scriptures and General Conference talks about baptisms for the dead.
Visit the Temple: Take a trip to the temple, if possible. Walk around the temple grounds, feel the spirit, and discuss the significance of the work done inside.
Testimony Sharing: Share personal experiences or testimonies related to the blessings and feelings you've experienced doing baptisms for the dead.
References Used (All 6 required):
1.
Scripture: Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:29 - "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?"
2.
Proclamation: "The Family: A Proclamation to the World". The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. ["All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and... has a divine nature and destiny."]
3.
Talk: "Doctrine of Baptism for the Dead" by [Specific Author/Leader - since you haven't mentioned a specific talk with this title, it would be best to replace this with a real talk from a church leader about Baptism for the Dead or use a general title until you have the specific one].
4.
Talk: "The Eternal Blessings of the Temple" by [Specific Author/Leader - this is a generic title and should be replaced with a real talk about temple blessings].
5.
Talk: The temple is a place of learning and revelation where sacred ordinances, like baptisms for the dead, are performed for our ancestors, linking generations together (Talk reference: "The Eternal Blessings of the Temple").
6.
Talk: The teaching of baptism for the dead and its significance in God's plan is consistently emphasized by Church leaders. It signifies God's love and justice for all His children (Talk reference: "Doctrine of Baptism for the Dead").
