Cultures of Ancient Civilization
Reading Worksheet #4
Temples, Rituals, and Religion
Read pp. 113-161 of
Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament
.
Record your answers to the following:
Choose one of these two comparative explorations (Tower of Babel, Garden of Eden)
and in 2-3 sentences describe how being aware of ancient Near-Eastern conceptions
about temples helps you understand the passage or imagery in the passage? (1 point)
Learning about the Tower of Babel while being aware of ancient Near-Eastern
conceptions really paints a clearer picture. Knowing that isn’t wasn’t a tower
or a high building
trying to reach the sky but it was made so that the Tower of Babel or also known as a ziggurat
would be a place where God will dwell among them, so they may be with God in heavens.
In 2-3 sentences explain the importance of the temple and temple rituals in ancient
Near-Eastern societies. (1 point)
The reason the temple and it’s rituals are important is because the temple rituals portrays
a different image of a god when in reality, our God who is Jesus is not like so. Through the
rituals of the temple, order was controlled and the needs of had to be cared for and labored for so
that the gods were able to do such miracles. That is important because our Living God is exactly
the opposite, where our God doesn’t need us because God sustains himself but he graciously
allows us to give him our offerings.
In 5-6 sentences compare and contrast the needs, jobs, and whims of Yahweh with
those of other ancient Near-Eastern deities. (2 points)
All deities of ancient Near-Eastern had needs which were met by humans. Yahweh does
not have any needs and if Yahweh did, humans are incapable of meeting them due to the fact of
the depravity of man. The job of ancient deities were delegated to kings so that the king may
enforce what had needed to be done. In the other hand, God chose whoever and whenever he
wanted to get a job done. Yahweh unconditionally elects people so that He alone may be
glorified, and all may know that it isn’t by man’s power, but by the Living God. The whims of
other deities had to do things where they would cease war, increase offerings, remodel the
temple, and much more whenever circumstances or an omen came to place. But with Jesus, he
asks for us to repent. We do not need to work more to justify our means, but need to repent and
let the blood be our atonement for our mistakes.
In 2-3 sentences describe the role of either prayer and piety or ethics and morality in
ancient Near-Eastern family religion. (1 point)
