Is it helpful to those who study the Gospels to understand the synoptic problem and source criticism? Why or why not? BIB-360 Topic 1 – DQ1 October 23, 2023 Hello Professor and Classmates, The Synoptic Gospels are essential because they give testimony to the existence and divinity of Jesus Christ. These books provide a testament to the works of Jesus Christ in healing the sick, feeding the poor, and teaching of his love and the coming of the Kingdom of God. The "synoptic problem" questions the specific literary relationship among the three synoptic gospels and the source or sources upon which each synoptic gospel depended when it was written. It is beneficial to understand synoptic problem and source criticism when we study the Gospels, mainly because it is fundamental to the conclusion of accurate interpretation. Understanding the author's purpose within the synoptic problem and source criticism between the Gospels will clarify how the reader understands them. Realizing that the four Gospels can be separated by the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) and the Gospel of John by itself, by way of source criticism, the reader can identify the parallels and variances between the synoptic Gospel, which simplifies outlooks that a reader can achieve while studying the text (Wenham & Walton, 2021). The synoptic problem is that the three of the Gospels are similar in phraseology, structure of the story, and its narration, with differences in the order or arrangement of the story. It is essential to acknowledge that the Gospels were evangelistic tools for the early Church, as the author had the audience in mind at the time of writing (Wenham & Walton, 2021). The synoptic problem involves all the difficulties arising from the similarities and differences between the Gospel accounts. Matthew, Mark, and Luke have received the title "Synoptic Gospels"because they present the life and ministry of Jesus Christ similarly. The content and purpose of John's Gospel are sufficiently distinct to put it in a class by itself. It is not one of the so-called Synoptic Gospels. Pastor Eli
