Unit 4 Devotional How does your work/career (current or future) reflect God's creation mandate as seen in Genesis 1:28? i. God made people in his image (Genesis 1:1–2:3) and gave them everything they needed to succeed (Genesis 2:4–25). As we've seen, God made us rule, have children, enjoy God's gifts, work together, and accept the limits of what God created. God blessed them and told them, "Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and rule it; have control over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and everything else that lives and moves on the earth." We pointed out that these have been called the "creation mandate" or the "cultural mandate," with Genesis 1:28 and 2:15 sticking out. (Gen. 1:28) ii. God put man to work in the Garden of Eden in the beginning. (Gen. 2:15) iii. You don't have to use this phrase, but Genesis chapters 1 and 2 explain it in length. God has always wanted us to help him improve the world as his junior partners. No one is made to settle for failure, do the bare minimum of work, sit around doing nothing for long periods, be part of a system that makes it hard for people to take the initiative, or work alone. What are the common "traps" in your field that could turn your work into an idol? When does wanting turn into wanting too much? The Ten Commandments give me a hint about all of these things, “You shall not covet" (Exodus 20:17) is the last of the Ten Commandments. And the word "covet" is the same word used in Psalm 19:10, where it says that the Scriptures are more desirable than gold. So, the word "desire" can mean something very good, but it can also mean "covetousness”. Hebrew and Greek say the same thing. I think the first rule gives us a hint about what turns wanting into greed. They explain to each other a lot. You could say that the first and last commandments of the Ten Commandments frame them. "You shall not have any other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3). That is the same as saying, "Don't want anyone or anything above me. Find me to be your most precious and desired thing." What spiritual disciplines could you use to help keep your focus on God and why? (Prayer, scripture, small group, worship, etc.) Spiritual practices are things like reading the Bible, praying, meditating, and fasting that can help a person grow in their faith. The inner practices show up in things like service, solitude, submission, and simplicity, as well as things like prayer, celebration, confession, and advice that are done with other people.
