Vang 1 Christina Vang Professor Ian Curran World Religion 1100 15 September 2023 News Journal Hinduism is a religion that believes in the interconnectedness of all life. It includes various beliefs and practices like karma, reincarnation, and the worship of many gods and goddesses. It values meditation, yoga, and rituals. In this course, we have learned the fundamental meaning of Hinduism, which can be summarized in four main parts. First, the Path of Pleasure (Kama) teaches the importance of enjoying life's pleasures while encouraging individuals to do so wisely. Secondly, the Path of Worldly Success (Artha), focuses on the pursuit of worldly achievements like wealth, power, and fame. Thirdly, the Path of Duty and Service (Dharma), which centers on fulfilling one's responsibilities in life. However, it is noted that, no matter how diligent one is, complete satisfaction of duty may never be attained. Lastly, the Path of Liberation is considered the ultimate desire of all human beings. These four paths provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the core principles and pursuits within Hinduism, allowing individuals to choose their spiritual path based on their goals. The article "In Hinduism, Women Create Spaces for Their Own Leadership" shows that Hinduism has adapted to the modern world in a variety of ways. It has adapted to changing social norms and inclusivity by making Hindu blessings and services welcoming to all, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, etc. Hinduism has also upgraded its technology by incorporating online platforms for rituals and websites such as shubhpuja.com. Additionally,
Vang 2 women play prominent roles in various aspects of Hinduism, from leadership positions in temples to being priests, challenging traditional gender norms. The article further mentions that Hinduism embraces a wide range of practices and philosophies and that there is no longer a central authority like the Pope in Catholicism. Thus, highlighting the internal diversity and complexity of Hinduism. From this article, we gain many insights into the contemporary expressions of Hinduism. It shows that Hinduism is not static but is evolving to meet the needs and values of the modern world. The religion showcases the importance of passing down knowledge and traditions, as well as the role of women in spreading Hindu teachings. Overall, the depiction of Hinduism in the article aligns with multiple aspects that we have learned in this course. The article highlights the diversity within Hinduism and how it accommodates different approaches to leadership and religious practice. Similarly, the four paths acknowledge the diversity of human desires and aspirations. While some may seek pleasure and enjoyment in life, others may focus on worldly success, duty, or spiritual liberation. Hinduism, like the four paths, respects this diversity. The article goes beyond our class discussions by presenting new information about the role of women in contemporary Hinduism. It highlights how women are challenging traditional gender norms by taking on prominent roles. This represents a departure from historical norms, where women had limited roles in certain religious practices. From this, I can agree with the points addressed in the article, as it illustrates how Hinduism is evolving to become more responsive to the changing values and needs of the modern world, including gender equality and diversity.
Vang 3 Buddhism is a path of personal growth and spiritual understanding founded by Siddhartha Gautama. The title "Buddha" means "awakened one" or "enlightened one." Followers of Buddhism don't worship a supreme god or deity. Instead, they focus on attaining enlightenment, which is a state of inner peace and wisdom. When individuals reach this elevated spiritual state, it's called nirvana. Buddhism offers practical methods to help individuals apply its teachings to transform and take full responsibility for their well-being. The article "In Buddhism, Women Blaze a Path but Strive for Gender Equity" shows that Buddhism has adapted to the modern world by acknowledging the importance of women's leadership and education within the religion. It highlights the roles of Buddhist women in teaching, running charities, and leading meditation courses. These changes reflect a growing awareness of gender equality in Buddhism, influenced by feminism and changing societal norms. The article underscores the internal diversity and complexity of Buddhism by highlighting the differences in the status of women across countries and Buddhist traditions. This diversity illustrates that Buddhism is not a monolithic tradition and can adjust to fit customs and societal contexts. The depiction of Buddhism in the article aligns with our course material as it features individuals like Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo and Venerable Dhammananda who have devoted their lives to spiritual development and enlightenment. Their personal journeys underscore the deep commitment and dedication that Buddhism encourages in its practitioners. Additionally, the article reinforces the idea that Buddhism doesn't involve worshiping a supreme deity but emphasizes practical methods for personal transformation and self-responsibility, which are the core teachings of Buddhism. The article further provides some new information that goes beyond our previous knowledge as it offers insights into the contemporary expressions of Buddhism,
