Sacred Space Paper Spaces In and Around Philadelphia: Research a Sacred Space. You are to choose a modern sacred space to compare with an ancient Greek Space that we have learned about in class. For example, you may pick the historic Laurel Hill Cemetery, or the Japanese teahouse in Fairmont Park, the Frank Lloyd Wright Synagogue in Cheltenham, or the Indian Temple partially preserved in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Richard Allen’s tomb at Mother Bethel Temple, or the chapel and synagogue at Eastern State Penitentiary. YOU MUST GO SEE THIS IN PERSON (attach entrance receipt to your final project packet II). Compare this Philadelphia space to one of the sacred spaces that we studied: how are they the same? How are they different? You must incorporate the following comparisons: What buildings are constructed in the space? Is there art work? Sculpture, painting etc. What kind and what does it depict? Why do you think that it is there? How do people interact with those buildings (do they go inside? Do they bring things to the space, what activities are done here?” What rituals or rites are performed here? And above all, make sure you are COMPARING it with the Ancient site you choose. Your choice of Ancient space can be general like “ancient Greek cemeteries,” or it can be specific like “The sanctuary of Olympia.” If you need some help with the ancient parallel, come talk to me. I expect to see footnotes/citations (but NOT necessarily quotations from authors!) and bibliography in this paper. If you are uncertain how to use either, come see me. The paper should be about 5 pages. Rubric: A: The final paper carefully describes the Philadelphia space; the parallel used to
compare the Philadelphia space is appropriate; the ancient space is analyzed in terms of ancient use; appropriate citations are used in the paper and an appropriate bibliography is appended. B: The paper has incomplete or missing information about the Philadelphia space; has incomplete or missing parallels to the ancient space; or is missing citations/footnotes and/or a bibliography. C: The paper has an inappropriate parallel; does not seek to draw comparisons between the Philadelphia space and the ancient space; is missing citations/footnotes and/or a bibliography F: The paper is not handed in within the deadline.
