Grantley Garner Rel C 471 Assignment 6 This assignment was very applicable and meant a lot to me. I loved Brother Haws’s two suggestions to first learn and discern the hierarchy of truths including the details and second the connections found to the Savior. To follow his invitation, I read part of King Benjamin’s sermon found in Mosiah 4. This chapter starts off with the people recognizing their need to depend on the Lord. King Benjamin recognizes this and teaches them that in order to be saved from their fallen and lost state, they must continually repent and humble themselves before God. After they have done such, they must love and serve their fellow men to retain a remission of their sins. One of the overall principles that stands out to me in this chapter is that in order for us to better love and serve our fellow men, we must “become one” with God first. King Benjamin teaches us this in that order. As he does so, he teaches us a little of our own identity too. Verse 19 says, “For behold, are we not all beggars? Do we not all depend upon the same Being, even God, for all the substance which we have, for both food and raiment, and for gold, and for silver, and for all the riches which we have of every kind?” As we try to serve others, we must understand that we are all trying to make it in this life. God has blessed each of us with what we have. We can’t judge others for what they don’t. Ultimately, as we love and serve others, we ourselves will grow closer to God and find ourselves on the covenant path back to Him.
