2 Discussion Question 2: Rehabilitation of John’s Gospel In the last several decades, the book of John, one of the four gospels, has undergone rehabilitation because of three factors. One is John Rylands Papyrus, which contains information about John 8:31-33 and John 8:37-37. Also, the archeological evidence indicates John was written in AD 125. 1 On the other hand, the Dead Sea Scroll, dating between 200 and 100 BCE, confirms the Book of John. The scrolls are written in Greek and contain information about characters as John the Baptist. 2 The Oxyrhynchus Papyri is another archeological evidence of the book of John and other gospels dating 100 and 130 BCE. 3 Among the three archeological evidences, John Rylands Papyrus is favorable because it contains specific information about the book of John. However, all three pieces of evidence increase the confidence to spread the gospel since a minister can integrate the gospel messages and historical evidence to convince the audience about Jesus. Discussion Question 4: Place, Date, and Purpose of the Gospel of John The Gospel of John is a selective, symbolic, eyewitness account of the person and ministry of Jesus. One of the challenging factors about the gospels is to determine the date and location of authorship. However, theologians maintain that the Gospel of John was authored in Asia Minor, particularly in Ephesus, to inform Hellenistic Christians about Jesus in the region in 100 CE. 4 Regardless of the historical facts about the Book of John, the primary objective is to inform readers about the transformational power of Jesus Christ. John tells modern readers that Jesus is the bread of life (John 6:35).
