1 INCORPORATING RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY IN PRACTICE DISCUSSING RELIGION Washington, D.C. is a diverse city with a wide range of religious beliefs and practices. There are many religions and denominations represented in Washington, D.C., including Christians (65%), Catholic (17%), Baptist (17%), Mainline Protestant (15%) Evangelical Protestant (14%), and Jewish (4%) (Pew, 2015). 2 practice means helping clients explore their spiritual selves and embark on a journey of personal discovery that can promote healing and well-being. My approach for discussing religion with a client in my community would be to begin by creating a safe and supportive environment where my client feels comfortable talking about their beliefs. I would accomplish this by being respectful of their beliefs, even if I disagree with them, and by avoiding making any assumptions about their religious background or practices. The NASW Code of Ethics Standard 1.02, Self-Determination, states that social workers "respect and promote the right of clients to self-determination and assist clients in their efforts to identify and clarify their goals” (NASW, 2023). This standard means that social workers should not impose their own values or beliefs on clients, including their religious beliefs. Instead, social workers should help clients to explore their own values and beliefs and to make their own decisions about their lives. Once the client feels comfortable talking about their religion and beliefs, I would ask them open-ended questions to get a better understanding of their beliefs and practices such as “What is your religious background?” and “How important is religion to you?” I chose this approach because by asking open-ended questions and being respectful of the client's beliefs, I am demonstrating my commitment to the client's right to self-determination. Because religion provides core beliefs that lay the foundation for its group members’ shared perceptions of social reality, religion can play an important role in a person’s identity (Marsiglia et al., 2021).
