Name: Jacob Hughes Date: 10/20/2021 Section: Week 8 – Books of History Pt.3 Old Testament Bible Study Assignment Passage: 2 Samuel 6:1-23 Instructions: For this assignment, you will be studying the Old Testament story of David and Mephibosheth found in 2 Samuel 6:1-23. You will use the template below in order to complete a study of this passage. In your study, you will use the skills of Observation, Interpretation, Correlation, and Application that you have become familiar with through your reading in Everyday Bible Study . I. Observation A. I have read 2 Samuel 6:1-23 in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com o Yes o No B. Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find as long as you meet the minimum amount. Similarity: The order in which the events take place are the same. Similarity: You can still understand the story and meaning of both texts. Difference: NIV is more literal and provides the intended meaning of the scripture. Difference: KJV goes into vast more detail than NIV. Difference: KJV leaves a lot of room for interpretation. C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying 1. Main characters: (List them) A. God B. David C. Michal
2. Plot: (50-100 words) David set out to retrieve the ark of God on a new cart with the 30,000 men he had gathered. They praised the ark while transporting it to the City of David. But then Uzzah accidentally touches the ark, in that moment God struck Uzzah with anger. David was angry and afraid of God that day so he left the ark at the house of Obed-Edom. The ark remained in the house of Obed-Edom for three months until David received word that the Lord blessed him and his entire household. After hearing this David set out to retrieve the ark once more whilst rejoicing the whole way. David made sacrifices and was dancing and praising the Lord. While entering the City of David Michal watched David praise the Lord and her heart filled with hatred. David then made more sacrifices and gave food to each person in the crowd of Israelites. After he was done David then returned home to bless his home, Michal greeted him and disgraced David for his actions while praising God. David told her it doesn’t matter in the eyes of God. Then Michal was unable to bear a child to the day of her death. 3. Narrative structure: (50-100 words) Note: Plot and Narrative Structure are not the same thing (see the tutorial and student example) Introduction: David's new found power and his quest to retrieve the ark of God. Inciting Incident: God strikes down Uzzah because he touched the ark by mistake. Rising Action: David feels emotions of fear and anger towards God so he leaves the ark of God with the house of Obed-Edom, where it stays for 3 months. Climax: David receives word that the ark of God has blessed Obed-Edom and his household. Falling Action: David gets the ark back from the house of Obed-Edom and was praising and rejoicing the entire time on the way back to the City of David and when it arrived. But was mocked by Michal. Resolution: David said that it doesn’t matter in the eyes of God. And Michal had no children to the day of her death. D. List basic observations about this passage using the “Key Question” for observation. Remember to review chapters 17 and 33 in Everyday Bible Study . This will help you be more detailed in your answers to “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how.” Please be detailed and specific as you answer these six key questions. 1. Who: a. God b. David c. Michal 2. What: David gathers 30,000 men to retrieve the ark of God.
After acquiring it again God strikes down a man who accidentally touches the cart carrying the ark of God. David is afraid and angry with God so he leaves the ark of God at the house of Obed-Edom. David hears that God has blessed Obed-Edom and his house. So David sets out to retrieve it once more. David brings back the ark of God to the City of David, while praising and glorifying God the whole time. Michal confronts David and tells him he is acting like a fool in front of all the people. David tells her that God chose him for a reason and God does not think he is acting like a fool. Then Michal is unable to have children to the day of her death. 3. Where: a. Baalah in Judah b. House of Abinadab c. Nakon d. Perez Uzzah e. House of Obed-Edom f. City of David g. The tent that David pitched for the ark of God h. David’s home 4. When: During davids time as king. 5. Why: Why did David set out to retrieve the ark of God? The ark of God was taken by the Palestins where they set it up in their temple but then they realized that God’s wrath wouldn’t allow that so they moved it to another city. Then when Daivd became the king over all twelve tribes his first priority was to reclaim the ark of God. Why did David leave the ark of God at Obed-Edom’s household for 3 months? Uzzah accidentally touched the cart carrying the ark of God. In anger God struck down Uzzah. After seeing this David became filled with fear and anger. Not wanting the ark in his city David left it at Obed-Edom’s house. Why did David get it back from Obed-Edom? David received word that the ark of God had blessed Obed-Edom and his household. Why did Michal mock David? David praised and worshiped the ark of God on the way back to the City of David and while in the city. In Michal’s eyes David was acting a fool. But to David he was expressing his utmost praise to the Lord. David told her that to even the slave he was held in the highest esteem. 6. How : How did David get the ark back? Men that David had gathered carried it back to the City of Daniel. This is because God did not want any mechanical thing to carry it around due to the fact that there was nothing mechanical about the arch. How did Michal not have any children for the rest of her life? She mocked David for praising the Lord, so her punishment was the inability to bear a child.
