What is the significance of the raising of Lazarus story (John 11) for John?
-
So Jesus hears his friend Lazarus is sick but he lives in Jerusalem and Jesus knows that for him
Jerusalem means death for sure, but Jesus loves him. When Jesus found out Lazarus died he
went to raise him from the dead from his tomb even though he knows it will cost him his own
life. The leaders of Jerusalem hear that Jesus rose his friend from the dead they start to think of
a way to kill Jesus. So Jesus lays down his life for his friend.
Why is the “foot-washing” (John 13) scene so important for the book of John? Explain.
-
Jesus takes on the common role of a servant and kneeled down to wash his disciples’ dirty feet.
A superior rabbi would never do this for his disciples. This is a symbol to reveal God’s nature ad
being of self-giving love. It is also a symbol to show that he is to become a servant and die for
the sins of the world. You love one another as I have loved you is the message of his great
command.
Explain the themes of Jesus’s last speech (John 14-17)
- The first part of Jesus’s last speech consists of him saying he is going so he can send the spirt which is
meaning Jesus is only one person he can only be there so much, but his spirit can be everywhere and
anywhere. The one God consists of the loving relationship between the father and the son, and the spirit
is the relationship between them. Jesus’ disciples are those who abide in God’s love. The spirit will
empower Jesus’ followers to carry on his mission which is the great command to act as a loving service,
to bear witness to the truth. Jesus predicts opposition like how the Jewish leaders hated him he knows
that his followers will also be hated but he tells them not to worry or be afraid because he has already
gained victory over the world.

What stories are “missing” from John, and what stories are “unique” to John?
-
John lacks the backbone of the gospel. Missing is the accounts of Jesus’ birth, his baptism, his
temptation in the wilderness, his proclamation of the coming Kingdom of God, his telling of the
parables, his casting our of demons, this transfiguration before some of his disciples, his
institution of the Lord’s supper, his prayer in the Garden of gethsemane, and his trial before the
Jewish authorities. Some of the unique stories include the turning of water into wine and raising
of the Lazarus from the dead.
What is the difference in why Jesus does miracles between John and the Synoptics (Matthew, Mark,
Luke)? (46-47)
-
Jesus does miracles to help people in need.
In Matthew he healed a blind man and people
believed that that must be the messiah. In John Jesus does miracles to prove his identity. In john
they are not called miracles they are called signs. At one point Jesus’ days that his signs are
designed to make people believe and that people won’t be able to believe without the signs.
Explain the difference in Jesus’s teaching between the Synoptics and John.
-
In John and Synoptics, Jesus teaches in public teachings, but the content is different. In Synoptics
Jesus teaches about the coming Kingdom of God through parables. In John, Jesus teaches about
how he is and how he came and how he related to God the Father and how he is the one sent
from God to bring salvation into the world. Jesus does not proclaim a future coming kingdom in
John, and he never tells a parable in John. In John the focus us on Jesus himself and the eternal
life that he brings here and now.

What does John 1:1 mean? Explain.
-
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This first
thing means that John is telling us that Jesus is God. The first part of this is god’s self-expression
that is who Jesus is. There was never a tine where the word was not with God.
Explain the themes of “opposition” and “glory.”
-
Glory is self-giving love. He starts by foot washing which is only a task that a servant would do.
He is also saying glorified by dying on the cross. By this it is a way for his followers to share that
the glory as they also share self-giving love.
Show how the structure of the book develops the themes that John wants to present.
-
John is showing that Jesus is God and that he offers real life in self giving love. It is the patter of
life of self-giving love that allows us to access that real life that Jesus gave for us that instills in us
and we live with eternal life a new quality of life. The church that Jesus established is a place of
self-giving love, a place we sacrifice for the sake of others. We need to love one another just as
Jesus loved us. Anyone can be his follower and offer that act of self-giving love.
