RESEARCH PROJECT: BIBLICAL INTEGRATION Research Project: Biblical Integration Project Assignment Aisha Trogdon Liberty University October 2, 2022
RESEARCH PROJECT: BIBLICAL INTEGRATION Research Project: Biblical Integration Project Assignment Everyone has an attitude that plays a part in the way they behave. There are also particular factors that have a role in shaping behavior that in turn, affects the person’s behavior. Research has shown that people engage in behaviors consistent with their existing attitudes and they use information seeking and processing strategies designed to strengthen and maintain their current attitudes (DeMarree, K, Clark, C, Wheeler, C, Briñol, P, & Petty, R, 2017). A person may express their behavior to match an attitude, their attitude may change during tension, and they justify their actions, as well as how a person observes their own behavior, deducing their attitude (Myers, D & Twenge, 2019). Actions can trigger a change in attitude, and with that, one can see that attitudes, along with elf-efficiency, are important factors in determining intentions and behavior; changes in attitude can have an impact in changing behavior (Sheeran, P, Maki, A, Montanaro, E, Yitshak, A, Bryan, A, Klein, W, Miles, E, & Rothman, A, 2016). Social norms also play an important role in maintaining social order, but along with this, it can also constrain a person to take on specific actions that run contrary to their attitudes. Social norms have an impact on both coordinating and constraining a person's behavior, but also on how the person’s attitude may not be consistent with their behavior as expected by social norms (Sekiguchie, T and Nakamaru, M, 2013). When looking at a social group, research has shown that participants were less critical of their own behavior when considering the behavior of others, justifying their own dishonest behavior by redefining it in a self-serving way as to allow them to feel morally virtuous (Vasquez, K., Oswald, D., Hammer, A, 2019). In many social situations, individuals undertake social behavior, even when the effect of that behavior is uncertain, this shows how cognitive preferences affect social behavior (Fahlel, S & Sautua, S, 2020). Considering this
RESEARCH PROJECT: BIBLICAL INTEGRATION information and research, one can see that an individual can think of themselves in a way of acting with behavior determining their attitudes. Biblical Worldview Integration When a person desires to shape their thinking, their behavior will begin to follow that behavior and in turn, so too will their attitudes. But how is it possible for a person to really think themselves into a way of acting and that impacting their attitudes and actions? It is written in Scripture, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Timothy 3:16-17. KJV). When looking at these verses, an individual must use God's Word to shape their way of thinking into not only a positive mindset, but also a godly one in order to integrate a biblical worldview. When the person's way of thinking has changed from negative to godly, their behavior will begin to change, and this will impact their attitudes. One must use God's word for guidance into who God is, to understand the Gospel, to understand what is expected of them, for correction, and to be equipped to do the will of God. Paul writes a powerful command regarding how a person can shape their thinking, their behavior, and their attitudes despite what social norms see as acceptable or not. In the book of Romans, the Apostle writes to the reader that they should not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of their minds so they may know what is good and what is acceptable to the perfect will of God (Romans 12:2). The way to do this is to spend time
