Introduction
The objective of 1 Samuel chapters 8 through 12 is to establish the Davidic kingdom for the nation of Israel. Although the future line of David begins with Saul as King, the book of 1 Samuel presents both negative as well as positive perspectives on its rule. The job of the prophet Samuel is to provide appointment and anointing to this first king while also bringing God's covenant people to realize that loyalty to the King would be a prerequisite of this first creation of
a monarchy. The people would need to stay in the Word, obey God's laws, and ultimately obey God's Kingship, not man's kingship, for man is under God's divine appointment. Because of God's providential governance, the chosen people would be directed by God's love for them through kingship over Israel, his salvation, and his decisions would always be just and faultless. The kingdom of Israel and its connection with the Scriptures unite in Saul, the first king of the Davidic lineage, in this presentation of 1 Samuel 8-12.
Kingship for Israel
The issue addressed in 1 Samuel chapters 8 through 12 precludes the historical longing of
man's heart: to be in charge and to have autonomy and importance. God is the King of the world and the one who judges until the end of the earth (Ps. 96:10). However, man desires a king to reign and judge in his stead as all the nations of the world have a king but the Israelites. “The very fact that the pro-monarchy tradition is intertwined with the anti-monarchy tradition indicates that the monarchy is an institution whose origin is in the Israelites imitating the pagan, non-covenant nations, but nevertheless is a phenomenon in which God is vitally involved and gives his imprimatur.”
