Discussion 8: Arab
Taylor Nichols, Ashley Labbie, Brandon Scott, Danielle Mirek
1) Religion is somewhat of an arbitrary dividing line in the Israeli-Arab conflict. Some of the
main issues in the conflict are land, power, and fear.
However, culture can also play a role in
creating mistrust and tension.
Please indicate 3 ways in which Arab and Israeli culture are
different from one another in terms of honor, communication (e.g., dugry), and authority.
One of the ways in which the Arab and Israeli culture are different from each other in
terms of communication. In Israeli cultures, communication is extremely direct
,
and
people feel free to say what is on their minds most of the time. Whereas in Arab cultures,
communication may be way less direct, and the way information is communicated may
vary according to the situation and the relationship.
Israeli culture and Arab culture also have a different way of looking at honor, In Israel
honor is achieved by accepting their military responsibility and based on the social
standing of their family whereas In the Arab culture, honor is achieved by a person's
reputation and group cohesiveness.
When it comes to Authority, Israeli people are very stubborn and don’t usually follow the
directions that they are given since they demand more freedom and their individual
preferences, whereas the Arab culture is much more collectivist than the Israeli therefore
they are most interested in the group decision and follow along with it since they aren't as
stubborn and brash as the Israeli people.
2) Briefly describe 2 things from the LECTURE on Abrahamic religions that you think are
important to know and how they are similar or different from what you knew before you
completed the lecture. You should also describe one thing that you learned from the
READING (e.g. something that is important, interesting, or different from what your
previous knowledge).
Something that we found interesting in the reading is the fact that if a person
makes enough money than they are supposed to give 2.5% of their money to
someone that is less fortunate than them. This idea of zakat, since their
unemployment rate is so famously high especially with the youth. As a group we
never heard of this costume growing up or throughout life in school. And as a
group we discussed what it would like if this idea of zakat was in our American
culture and if our nation would be so split as it is right now.
Something that we found to be interesting in the lecture on the Abrahamic
religions was the inequalities of the Health and educational benefits that the Arab
cultures goes through since in Israeli, they have Health care that everyone can
afford and free education and considering that they are so close geographically to
the Arab region, we as a group thought they would have the same as the Israeli
people.
Another thing that we found to be interesting in the lecture was that the Islams
view Mohammed as a prophet and not a Divine God, we found this to be
interesting since the Islams view Mohammed in the same way that the Christians
View God, The Son (Jesus), and The Holy Spirit. We also it found it interesting
that Christians believe there are three parts to God, considering that majority of
Americans are Christian, we figured we would be familiar with the religion but as
a group we discussed that none of us realized that Christianity was a trinitarian
monotheistic religion and that there were 3 parts to their one God.
