BIBL 104 B IBLE S TUDY P ROJECT : C ORRELATION T EMPLATE Passage: Acts 9:36-43 A. How does this passage from Acts fit within the metanarrative of the Bible? State what type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation) and explain why you believe this to be so? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (200-300 words) in length. It may be good to review chapter six in Everyday Bible Study in order to recall what each of these four themes are about. This passage from Acts fits within the metanarrative of the Bible as a story of creation. The Bible starts with the story of creation with the central focus of showing who God is and the wonder of his capabilities (Cartwright & Hulshof, 2019). Throughout this passage God shows who He is. There is nothing that He can’t do, including the miracle preformed of breathing life back into Tabitha. This was a powerful reminder that nothing in life is outside of God’s ability or control. The story of creation also touches on the fact that God created mankind in His own image, and He set them apart. He created Tabitha in His own image, setting her apart. Tabitha was blessed with the gift of an altruistic heart. She was known in her community to be empathetic towards others and always eager to help those around her that were in need. Another part of creation speaks about the special relationship God has with mankind. I believe this too is portrayed in this passage. The community in Joppa were devastated by the passing of Tabitha and were mourning their loss. God gave them their beloved back and the community was ecstatic. Word of this miracle spread throughout Joppa and more believers were born. I think this compassionate act is an example of the love God has for his people. Throughout the story God shows that He is present, He is powerful, and He is good. B. How does your principle from Acts 9:36-43 fit with the rest of the Scripture? This principle is the one you have written out in 1-3 sentences in the Interpretation section. If your principle is a true Biblical principle, it will be reflected throughout the Scriptures. Where is the principle discovered in this New Testament narrative found elsewhere in the Scriptures? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (200-300 words) in length. Be specific. List, explain, and cite your supporting passage(s) from Scripture. Tabitha’s story in this passage proves to provide an important lesson. It shows the immeasurable power of God. This passage also provides an important reminder, this reminder being the power of prayer. Starting with the unfathomable power of God. There are examples of God’s immense power that is displayed throughout scripture. Some examples of this in scripture can be found in Genesis with the story of creation, as well as in Colossians just to name a few. “For in him all things were created: things in the heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him” (New International Version, 2011, Col 1:16). Additionally, Page 1 of 2
BIBL 104 the importance of prayer is mentioned again and again throughout the entirety of the Bible. Some specific pieces of scripture can be found in John. “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name and I will do it” (New International Version, 2011, John 14:13). The story in Acts 9 displays the incredible power God has over death, as well as the power of prayer. C. How does this passage from Acts reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ? State and explain at least one way that the principle of this passage identifies something of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (200-300 words) in length. Be specific. List, explain, and cite your supporting passage(s) from Scripture. This passage from Acts reflects the person and work of Jesus Christ in many instances. Focusing first on Tabitha’s story and who she was as a person is reminiscent of Jesus. She too had a kind heart and an altruistic nature. She showed others kindness and was selfless in her acts of service, as was Jesus. Both were compassionate towards the outcasts and more vulnerable members of society. Another example of this can be found with the passing of Tabitha due to her illness and then Peter praying over her to bring her back. There are similarities found between this event and Jesus’ own resurrection. Even more similarities can be found in the story of Lazarus. He, just like Tabitha, passed away due to illness. Like Peter, Jesus was summoned to come and help in anyway he could. When he arrived Lazarus had already passed. Due to his love for him as well as his sisters, Jesus brought Lazarus back from the dead. He made it known to the crowd surrounding them that God had sent Him (New International Version, 2011). These events of resurrection align with the stated principle showing the incredible power of God. The sisters of Lazarus were devastated at the loss of their brother. They beg Jesus to bring him back. John 14:13 reminds us that anything we ask for in His name, he will do (New International Version, 2011). Jesus bring Lazarus back, showing just how powerful prayer can be. References: John Cartwright and Chris Hulshof, Everyday Bible Study: Growing in the Christian Faith Links to an external site. , ed.
