BIBL 104 Name: B IBLE S TUDY P ROJECT : C ORRELATION Passage: Acts 19:11-22 A. How does this passage from Acts fit within the metanarrative of the Bible? State what type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation) and explain why you believe this to be so? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (150-300 words) in length. It may be good to review chapter 6 in Everyday Bible Study to recall what each of these four themes are about. The passage fits within the metanarrative of the Bible as Acts is a continuation of the Gospel of Luke and provides an account of the early Christian church's expansion and the ministry of the apostles. Moreover, this passage is situated in the broader narrative of Paul's missionary journeys, particularly his time in the city of Ephesus. Redemption is the type of story I believe this is, since it is evident that God’s plan of redemption is on display with his ongoing work through Jesus Christ as His power is manifested in the healing of the sick and the expulsion of evil spirits by Apostle Paul. In addition, the encounter with the seven sons of a Jewish priest serves as a deterrent tale, explaining the need for true faith and the consequences of invoking the name of Jesus in vain, knowing that it requires a genuine relationship with Him and cannot be done superficially. The later repentance of those involved and the spread of the gospel reflect the theme of redemption and transformation, as people turn from sinful doings to embrace faith in Jesus. Acts 19:11-22 contributes to the overarching biblical metanarrative of God's redemptive plan unfolding through history, leading humanity from the fall into sin towards the ultimate hope of a new creation in Christ. B. How does your principle from Acts 19:11-22 fit with the rest of the Scripture? This principle is the one you have written out in 1-3 sentences in the Interpretation Assignment. If your theological principle is a true Biblical principle, it will be reflected throughout the Scriptures. Where is the theological principle discovered in this New Testament narrative found elsewhere in the Scriptures? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (150-300 words) in length. Be specific. Give, explain, and cite your supporting passage(s) from Scripture. The principle that God's power functions through sincere faith and a genuine relationship with Him is a consistent theme throughout the Bible. The Bible consistently teaches that God's power is most effectively and intimately experienced when coupled with genuine faith, a sincere relationship with Him, and a humble heart. This principle runs throughout both the Old and New Testaments. In Matthew 17:20 "He replied, 'Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to
BIBL 104 this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'" Jesus' statement highlights the extraordinary power of even a small amount of genuine faith. In Mark 5:34 “He said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.'" Jesus often attributes healing and miracles to the faith of those who approach Him in sincerity. In John 15:5 : "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing." The verse from Jesus' teaching underscores the necessity of abiding in Him to bear fruit, highlighting the relationship aspect. Overall, the principle of having a genuine relationship with God bears fruits, is all throughout the Bible. C. How does your theological principle from this passage in Acts reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ? State and explain at least one way that the theological principle of this passage correlates with something of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (150-300 words) in length. Be specific. Give, explain, and cite your supporting passage(s) from Scripture. The theological principle from Acts 19:11-22 , which emphasizes that God's power functions through sincere faith and a genuine relationship with Him, reflects the person and work of Jesus Christ in several ways. These are: Miracles and healing, exclusive authority, repentance, and transformation, spread of the Gospel, and personal relationship with God. All these correlates with something of the person and work of Jesus. For example, in John 14:6 Jesus repeatedly taught that “He is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through Him”. Additionally in Matthew 28:19-20, the passage highlights how the Word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. This aligns with Jesus' commission to His disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel. Moreover, Jesus emphasized loving God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind ( Matthew 22:37 ). In summary, the theological principle in Acts 19:11-22 reflects the person and work of Jesus by exhibiting His divine authority, the special power of His name, the transformative impact of faith in Him, the spread of His gospel, and the importance of a personal relationship with Him.
