Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A. I have read Acts 19:11-22 in both a formal translation (NASB, NRSV,
ESV, or CSB)
and a functional translation (
NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please
use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com
o
Yes
o
No
B.
Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities
and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. These similarities and
differences should be related to the text itself rather than the translation. For example, an
observation like, “The formal translation is harder to read” is not an acceptable observation
because it deals with the translation itself rather than the text. You may list as many
similarities and differences that you find providing that you meet the minimum amount for
each one.
1.
Similarity –Both translations ESV and NIV note that God did outstanding miracles
through the hands of Paul. It is mentioned that after all the great things had been
done, Paul wanted to go to Rome.
2.
Similarity – Both translations make clear that some Jews who went around driving
out evil spirits (exorcists) invoke the name of the lord Jesus over those who had evil
spirits.
3.
Difference – The NIV functional translation is much more descriptive on verse 16
than that of the ESV. NIV states that the evil spirit that a man had leaped out and
jumped on the exorcists Jews and gave them such a beating that they ran out of their
houses naked and bleeding. ESV dos does not state that they were bleeding, just that
they were naked and wounded.
4.
Difference – ESV states in Verse 15 that the evil spirit knows Jesus, and recognizes
Paul, when in NIV the evil spirit knows Jesus and know about Paul.
5.
Difference - NIV states in Verse 19 that those who had practiced sorcery burned
their scrolls and the total calculated in value came to fifty thousand drachmas ( a
former monetary unit of Greece), when in ESV it states the calculated value of the
sorcery books was about fifty thousand pieces of silver.
C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying.

Plot: (50-100 words)
In Acts 19:11-22, Paul, the apostle, performs exceptional miracles in Ephesus.
Handkerchiefs and aprons touched by him heal the sick and cast out evil spirits. A
