BIBL 104 Name: Tira Beard B IBLE S TUDY P ROJECT : I NTERPRETATION T EMPLATE Passage: Acts 19:11-22 A. Summarize: Determine the author’s main point. In 1-2 paragraphs (200-400 words) explain what you think the author is trying to communicate in this passage. Remember two things. First, the focus of this summary is theological and not narrative. In other words, your summary should highlight what this passage communicates about who God is and what God is doing. Second, words like “I,” “We,” “Us,” and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words. Thus, they should not be used in your answer for this question. Interpretation is about “then and there” and not “here and now.” We were not there so the passage is not about us. Our “part” in the passage is the application or how we will respond to God’s Word. A gathering of Jewish exorcists endeavored to copy Paul’s extraordinary signs and wonders by summoning, in the name of Jesus, over a demon-possessed man. The evil spirit responded saying he knew of Jesus, and he knew of Paul but this Jewish man, he did not know of. The Jewish man was overwhelmed by this response and he and others around ran from the area in fear and embarrassment. This turned out to be well known in Ephesus and it drove many individuals to walk in fear of the lord and respect for speaking in Jesus' name. Those who practiced magic arts also confessed their deeds and burned their valuable scrolls, totaling a large sum of money. the passage concludes with Paul's plans to leave for Jerusalem after spending some time in Macedonia and Achaia. He was determined to go there, and he sent two of his disciples, Timothy, and Erastus, ahead to prepare for his visit. In general, these sections feature the force of God and the power of the name of Jesus, as well as the extraordinary effect of the gospel in the city of Ephesus. Page 1 of 3
BIBL 104 B. Identify: Based on your answer above, write out one principle from this passage. What is the one thing the whole thing is saying? You should be able to express this principle in 1- 3 sentences. As with the previous answer, this principle should be theological and rooted in who God is and/or what God is doing. Please remember that words like “I,” “We,” “Us,” and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words. The power and authority that is found in the name of Jesus is not to be mocked or used lightly. Signs wonders and miracles follow those that believe, but not those that speak in His name in vain. C. Check: Consult at least one scholarly resource to offer support for the theological principle that you believe the passage is teaching. In 1-2 paragraphs (200-400 words), quote, properly cite, and interact with this scholarly resource to demonstrate that it supports your theological and interpretive conclusion. One theological principle that is major in these verses is the act of surrender. While Acts 19:11-22 may not explicitly depict surrender, the theme of surrender and commitment to the Christian faith is woven throughout the entire book of Acts and the journeys of the early disciples and believers. Charles Swindoll says “In general, these sections feature the force of God and the power of the name of Jesus, as well as the extraordinary effect of the gospel in the city of Ephesus (Insights on Acts, 2016). Numerous people, including the Messenger Paul, gave their lives to follow Jesus and spread the gospel. This surrender involved giving up their old ways, beliefs, and often their personal ambitions to serve a higher purpose in the name of Christ. Page 2 of 3
