Angelology
Definition of Angelology
Angelology is the study and speculation of Angles.
Angels are spiritual beings created by
God to serve Him, though created higher than man. Some have remained obedient to Him and
carry out His will, while others, disobeyed, fell from their holy position, and now stand in active
opposition to the work and plan of God.
Distinctives of Angelology
There are three distinctive types of angles the Bible mentions, seraphim, cherubim, and
ministering spirits, which is perhaps more of a description than a name. The word Angel itself
means messenger both in the Hebrew and in Greek and describe one who executes the purpose
and will of the one whom they serve.
The holy angels are messengers of God, serving Him and
doing His bidding. The fallen angels serve Satan, the god of this world. The Angles that did not
fall are described as “holy ones”. There are two reasons for this the first is that they are the
creation of a holy God, they were created perfect without any flaw or sin. Second, they are called
holy because of their purpose. They were “set apart” by God and for God as His servants and as
attendants to His holiness.
Relation of Angelology to Believers
By creation, man is lower than the angels. Angels are higher in intelligence, power, and
movement, yet angels serve men as ministering spirits. Although we may be lower than angles
by creation, we are higher than angles because of our union with Christ. Us Christians share
Christ’s seat at the right hand of God angles do not, nor will they ever.
Application
There can be several applications about Angels to mankind, one application is this,
Angles were made to help Christians in our spiritual warfare with Satan. As we know there has
been a spiritual warfare for the souls of men since Adam and Eve sinned. Satan and his fallen
Angels are doing everything they can to distract men form the love of God. So why do we think
that it is just us fighting against Satan? We are not alone God has his messengers fighting for and
with us to deter Satan’s work. Although the world we live in right now may seem as though
Satan has won, we know that in the end god will prevail and Satan and his followers will be cast
into the lake of fire.
