Option: 3 Nephi 24:8-11, 3 Nephi 25:5-6 - The Law of Tithing and Turning Hearts to Ancestors
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I have always been taught about the importance of tithing and the blessings that come from it. However, as I read through the directed study
activity, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of why the Savior was commanded to teach the Nephites about the Law of Tithing and the turning of hearts to their fathers.
In 3 Nephi 24:8-11, the Savior quotes the prophet Malachi, who prophesied about the blessings that come from paying tithing. This law was not new to the Nephites, as they had been taught about it by their own prophets. However, the Savior's emphasis on it shows that it is an important principle that must be followed in order to receive the promised blessings.
But why was it necessary for the Savior to teach this to the Nephites? I believe that it was to remind them of the importance of giving back to the Lord and to help them understand that tithing is not just a commandment, but a way to show our love and faith in God. By obeying this law, we are showing our willingness to sacrifice for the building of His kingdom on earth.
In 3 Nephi 25:5-6, the Savior also quotes Malachi's prophecy about the turning of the hearts of children
to their fathers. This is a crucial part of our doctrine, as we believe in the eternal nature of families and the importance of sealing our ancestors to us through temple ordinances. The Savior knew that by teaching the Nephites about this prophecy, they would understand the significance of their role in helping to turn the hearts of their ancestors to God.
I believe that Malachi's analogy of the windows of heaven being opened is a symbol of the blessings that come from paying tithing. Just as the windows of heaven are opened to pour out blessings, our obedience to this law opens the way for blessings to pour into our lives. It is a reminder that God is a generous and loving Father who wants to bless His children abundantly.
Participating in family history and temple work has truly turned my heart to my ancestors. As I have researched and learned about their lives, I have felt a greater connection to them. And as I have performed ordinances for them in the temple, I have felt their presence and gratitude. It has strengthened my testimony of the eternal nature of families and the importance of fulfilling our role in helping our ancestors receive the blessings of the gospel.
In conclusion, the Savior's teachings about the Law of Tithing and the turning of hearts to our ancestors
are a reminder of the love that God has for His children. By following these principles, we not only receive blessings in this life, but we also help to bring salvation to our ancestors. I am grateful for the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of these teachings and for the blessings that come from living them.
