Passage: Acts 9:36-43
A. I have read Acts 9:36-43 in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com
o
Yes
o
No
B.
Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find as long as you meet the minimum amount. 1.
Similarity – Both translations center on Dorcas dying, being laid in the upper room, then coming back to life.
2.
Similarity – Both translations show Peter as the vessel in which God worked his miracle of resurrection.
3.
Difference – The wording in Acts 9:40 is different, in that the NLT says Peter asked
the others to leave the room and the NKJV states that Peter put them out. This difference is significant as commanding the room as implied by the NKJV signifies the authority held by Peter to commit the miracle requested of him.
4.
Difference – Again the word changes in Acts 9:38 change the impact of the verse. The NLT states that the believers heard Peter was nearby, where as the NKJV states
that the disciples had heard Peter was nearby. This slight alteration is unbelievably important because anyone can be a believer but only truly devoted and committed persons of faith can be disciples. This adds to the importance of the miracle later written, in that although she was surrounded by persons of great faith none could perform the works required to bring her back, emphasizing the authority in Christ held by Peter.
5.
Difference – Acts 9:42 is different in that the NLT says the town believed in the Lord while the NKJV say the people believed on the Lord. This change is vital, just Page 1 of 6

like the previous two mentioned above, in that many people can believe in something but only a small remnant can build a foundation for their lives upon something. Beliving in God means you accept his information as truth, where as believing on God means the bible forms the basis that orders every choice of your life. In other words believing in something is subject to change but believing on something means permanent embedded truths.
C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying
1. Main characters: (List them) Dorcas, Peter, the disciples 2. Plot: (50-100 words) Dorcas, a very kind and charitable woman, falls ill and dies.
