1 Mandee Madden BIBL 255 Dr. Wallace 11/18/21 Week 4 Scholars and theologians alike remain divided on the authorship of the first Gospel, Matthew. While the authorship is essential, it is not necessary to the final analysis because the Gospel of Matthew is written in the genre of biography—focusing on the subject—not the author. Matthew (also known as Levi), a tax collector, was an Apostle and one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, according to the four Gospels (Mk 3:18, Mt 10:3, Lk 6:15, Acts 1:13). The Gospel of Matthew noted that Matthew lived as a tax collector before he began following Jesus. That is important because, during that time in history, tax collectors were one of the most reviled professions in ancient Judaism. Matthew was an eyewitness to Jesus’ ministry, and the Gospel of Matthew was the first in the New Testament. Conversely, the Gospel of Matthew is not first in terms of chronological order, nor is the arrangement of events. The collection of events, narratives, etc., are intentionally designed for topical and theological reasons.3 Scholars believe that Matthew (Levi) was writing to a convinced Jewish audience that Jesus was the Messiah, God’s Messiah. Often times throughout, Matthew used Old Testament citations and quotations to highlight Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Matthew’s writing, believed to be directed at a Jewish audience, highlighted the foreshadowing of the Christ as the Messiah, and it demonstrated to the Jews that Jesus Christ was in fact the Messiah of the Old Testament prophecy. Jesus, the Son of God, fulfilled the call of Israel. On the first page of the Gospel of Matthew, he begins speaking about Jesus with a genealogy. Matthew
2 intentionally began this way to again highlight the entire story of the Bible. The Bible is not written about God, by God. Matthew’s Gospel summarizes that story by providing genealogy as it relates to Jesus the Messiah. Matthew’s genealogy reminds one that the Bible is a true story of God’s faithfulness, and that Jesus is the one true hope. The main characters in Matthew’s genealogy are Abraham and David. The reason these two are the main characters are to confirm Jesus’ legitimacy as the promised Savior and King. The one who will bring Israel’s history to its climax. Works Cited Strauss, M. L.
