Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A. I have read Acts 19:11-22 in both a formal translation (NASB, NRSV, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com

Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. These similarities and differences should be related to the text itself rather than the translation. For example, an observation like, “The formal translation is harder to read” is not an acceptable observation because it deals with the translation itself rather than the text. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find providing that you meet the minimum amount for each one.
1.
Similarity – Both translations emphasized how when the jews tried to cast the evil spirit out the evil spirit wounded them, made them naked and then cast them out these are two very specific details that they made sure to include.
2.
Similarity – Both of the translations made sure to mention that Paul went through Macedonia and Achaia because he felt compelled by the spirit.
3.
Difference – A difference I noticed that is only a few words but makes a big difference is when the passage is talking about the jews who were going around and
casting out evil spirits. The ESV version refers to them as “
itinerant Jewish
exorcist” in verse 13 whereas the NLT just called them “A group of Jews”
4.
Difference – When the passage quotes what the Jews casting out demons said the ESV version says, “
I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaim” whereas the MLT version says, “I
command you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out!”
5.
Difference - When the passage quotes how the demons answered the exorcist the ESV version says they said “
Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” but the NLT version says “I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?”

C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying.
1. Main characters: (List them)
Paul, Seven sons of Sceva, the demon
2. Plot: (50-100 words)
Paul was preforming many miracles casting out demons and curing diseases. This caused a group of Jews to travel from town to town trying to do the same thing. But when they tried to cast out the demon it came out of the man and attacked them all. This story spread through Ephesus and caused a solemn fear. This caused many of the people practicing witchcraft to bring
their sorcery books and burn them.
3. Story structure: (50-100 words)
Note: Plot and Story Structure are not the same thing (see the tutorial and student example)
Introduction- God gave Paul the power to preform miracles and he was healing people and casting out demons.
Inciting Incident- A group of Jews was trying to cast out demons too and the demon they were trying to cast out attacked them.
Rising Action- A healthy fear spread throughout Ephesus.
Climax- All of the people practicing witchcraft in Ephesus repented.
Falling Action- They burned their books about witchcraft.
Resolution- Paul kept traveling around spreading the gospel.
