When speaking about religion there is a tendency for this topic to be pushed away from the public arena and has the potential to affect the way that Christians engage. This is because religion is a topic that most people do not really focus on and now a days disregard the things that individuals believe in. This leads to most conversations remaining at surface level with no intention of going any deeper. Since religion is not something that most want to discuss, Christians will hold back their thoughts and experiences on this topic, so they are not viewed differently by their peers. Another reason could be because Christian's fear what people will think. It is true that “our greatest hesitations come from wondering what others will think of us and how they will react, so we fear taking a risk because we are afraid of how others will take it” (FCA, 2020). In my life I can see the sacred/secular divide in my daily life. At the school where I work, I do not have any co-workers who are Christian and/or want to have discussions about religion. The job that I work for insists that God is not spoken about to the children or throughout the school. Since I do not have many individuals to engage in a conversation about religion I tend to shut down and keep my thoughts and opinions to myself to prevent being looked at differently. Within my sphere of influence the sacred/secular divide can be removed by standing firm on what I believe in and speaking about it. Mark 16:15-16 states, “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” ( King James Bible, 2024, Mark 16:15- 15). Learning to be comfortable with this topic even around individuals who do not share the same views will help build conversation in a way that is suitable for both myself and the individuals that I am talking to. Going about this topic in a delicate and respectful manner and with the mindset that everyone has their own opinions may help individuals feel more comfortable when having these types of discussions and can assist in eliminating the sacred/secular divide.
