“The story of God’s plan, the bible, shows us that through Christ Jesus we are loved by God adopted as his sons and daughters, and declared heirs through God (Galatians 4:7)” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, and Hulsof, pg 6) Like the verse in Galatians 4:7 says we are no longer slaves to sin because of Jesus. Jesus’s blood forgives my sins and his resurrection and ascension to heaven gives us eternal life. In essence Jesus's death makes us anew. “Paul defined the gospel of Jesus Christ in first Corinthians 15: 1-4, “now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel I have preached to you, which you are being saved, if you hold to the message I preach to you unless you believed in vain. For I pass to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, and Hulsof, pg 18) When I read this sentence, I thought this is the gospel in a nutshell. The first four books of the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, It's plain about Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection, but in a different context. I feel like this verse from first Corinthians says what all four books of the gospel teaches. “It is also important to note that a study of the Old Testament law needs to be done in the context of the early old testament narrative.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, and Hulsof, pg 24) So many people want to quote the old laws in the Old Testament, that they forget that Jesus paid the price for us, if we don't follow all of them. None of us can live the perfect life and perfectly obey like Jesus. Although, the old laws are important, we must remember what Jesus said was the two most important commands love God first and then love each other. “We should not be afraid of being honest with God. Not only does he already know how we feel, but also it is through these moments of emotional honesty that God can use the Psalms in our lives.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, and Hulsof, pg 25 Whenever I feel troubled, one of my favorite books to read is Psalms. Even though God knows our circumstances and our needs, we must always come to him in prayer. The enemy loves to attack us when we are at our lowest, its in those times we must be honest with ourselves and God, we need him in every aspect of our lives. “When we see the Bible as a book of instructions or rules, we downplay the power of the law, and we overestimate our ability to keep it in a way that will please God.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, and Hulsof, pg 30) Often we read the Bible and interpret in our own way. A lot of times we don't look at the context of a story or a verse. It is very important to read the whole story instead of a verse or two to get the complete understanding of what God is trying to tell us. “Christ perfect life is the antidote for the weight of the law and commands of God.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, and Hulsof, pg 30)
Because we can't live perfectly Jesus could live perfectly. We humans have a sinful and wicked nature, so there is no way we can live and obey perfectly. Jesus is the son of God and because he lived perfectly we can have eternal life with our sins forgiven. “Like many of the Old Testament prophetic warnings, Revelation is not merely a pronouncement of the end of the world. Readers of these prophecies are also called to repentance.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, and Hulsof, pg 21) Even though revelation does talk about the end times, there are messages throughout the book about salvation and redemption. It is important to not focus on the apocalypse, but to focus on repenting your sins and acknowledge that Jesus is your Lord and savior. If you do those things, then all the things that happens in the Book of Revelation will not affect you. “Each word of scripture is designed to move the plan forward in a way that glorifies God and points to Christ.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, and Hulsof, pg 3) Each scripture that is written is a map of the plans that God has for each of our lives each scripture not only maps out the plans that God has for each of us but also provides us with a Christ like plan for our lives that glorifies God. As stated in second Timothy 3: 16-17, all scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. “What does it mean to you that Christ ascended to heaven? At minimum the ascension of Christ spotlights the fact that we have an intercessor who is in the presence of a God on our behalf.” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, Hulsof, pg 6) Christ’s ascension to heaven shows he paid the ultimate price for us by defeating death and sin. With his ascension to heaven he sits at the right hand throne of God until his return to earth. As in John 16:17, Jesus stated that in a little while you will see me no more and then after a little while you will see me because I am going to the father, meaning that on behalf of God he is ascended to heaven to prepare a place for us believers. “The New Testament restates the 2 greatest commands that relate to the primary purpose for the law: love God (vertical relationship between God and his followers) and love your neighbor (horizontal interrelationships among people).” (Cartwright, Guiterrez, and Hulsof, pg 24) Even though these two commands are part of the old laws, because of Jesus, these are the two most important commands. We must love God first above all else because he loved us first. We must love each other as Jesus commanded because God is love.
