Why it is Important to Study the Bible
Looking back over my last thirty-seven years has allowed me to see the importance of studying the Bible has had over my life and those lives around me. In 1 Peter it states, “
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,
so that by it you may grow up
in your salvation.” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, 1 Peter 2:2). Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz’s book, Knowing the Bible 101 described the importance best when they said, “Just as a baby needs and craves his mother’s milk, Christians (especially new Christians) must drink in the spiritual nourishment provided by God’s word.” (Bickel & Jantz, 1998). These both are telling us as Christians, as a baby hungers for their mother’s milk, we as Christians need to learn to long for God’s Word. The Bible is also important because it’s God’s love letter to each of His children. God chose the written language to make sure we all received the same message today as those who did yesterday and those who will receive in the years to come. God show’s me that He is the way and the
truth as He mentions in John, “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, John 14:6). I enjoy reading Psalm’s and this verse captures my heart speaking out to God, “
Guide me in your truth
and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you
all day long.” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, Psalm 25:5). I have learned I need Him in every moment of my life for His Word helps me become a well-rounded Christian and a servant to God. By reading His Word it has allowed me to gain a deeper relationship with Him, but I also have a better understanding of His plans He has in store for me. Studying the Bible is also very important when it comes to knowing what is right from wrong.
It explains sin and it helps provide us with the knowledge to overcome evil and refrain from sinning. Discernment and wisdom are important when studying the Bible. Proverbs informed us, “
