Read Genesis 37:1-36 in your Bible. What were the circumstances that led to Joseph’s brothers’ treatment of him?
As you read Genesis 37:1-36, you learn how Joseph’s brothers were very envious/jealous of him. The brothers did not like the relationship their father had for Joseph as Joseph was his favorite son and did the other sons did not fathom their father making him a robe. The sons were upset that Joseph brought back a bad report
about them to their father. The brothers were told about the dreams Joseph had been dreaming and they hated him even more. 2)
Read Genesis 39. In Genesis 39, what character traits do you see emerge in Joseph in response to his encounter with Potiphar’s wife?
While reading Genesis 39, we are shown the loyalty Joseph has for Potiphar when it comes to Potiphar’s wife. Potiphar had left everything in the care of Joseph, which allowed Potiphar’s wife to take notice of him. She was eager to get him in bed with her. Joseph simply refused any temptation thrown his way. By simply refusing her, it shows his integrity. Joseph sure was faithful to his master and he repeatedly refused temptation when it came to Potiphar’s wife, which also shows he has self -control. 3)
Read Genesis 40 and 41. In these passages, what circumstances led to Joseph’s favor with the king?
In the passages, the circumstances that led to Joseph’s favor with the king was his ability to interpret the dreams of others. Joseph had interpreted dreams for the Cupbearer and the Baker, which both were accurate. When Pharaoh had a dream and
was not able to interpret it, the Cupbearer advised Pharaoh about Joseph and his ability. Pharaoh sent for Joseph. While reading Genesis 41 it states, “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, Genesis 41 :16).
Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream. Pharaoh was pleased with Joseph’s interpretation that he placed Joseph in charge. In Genesis 41, “
You shall be in charge of my palace,
and all my people are to submit to your orders.
Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you. So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge
of the whole land of Egypt.”” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, Genesis 41:40-41).
4)
Based on this biblical account of Joseph, what characteristics do you see in Joseph that led to his position of influence and leadership? How does this connect to your readings during your time in this course?
There are several characteristics of Joseph that led to his position of influence and leadership. Joseph was very wise and discerning. Joseph’s devotion to God was inspiring and one we should all take heed to. Joseph never stated that he had the ability to interpret the dreams but always grave the credit to God. Like we all should do, we should give all the glory to God. No matter what was thrown at Joseph, he remained loyal to God. From his brother’s trying to kill him, him ending up a slave in prison, he never once lost his faith in God. Joseph mentioned in Genesis, “
How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” (Holy Bible, New International Version, 1973/2011, Genesis 39:9). I feel the Story of Joseph is connected to our readings during the time of this course because we are to remain loyal to God while we show strength, remaining humble, having integrity, wisdom, discernment, and leadership when it comes to facing challenges in our daily life and to become a well-rounded Christian as we transform.
