Benchmark—Gospel Essentials God created the world in three days. He had a vision of a species in which he wanted to create in his image and likeness. Over the course of these three days, he created the Earth, the nature that we see around us, and finally us. It all started with Adam and Eve, the first man and woman. Over the course of time man betrayed God and brought upon this world Original Sin. Man lived with this sin for ages until God brought his only son Jesus to free us from all Original Sin. The word of God and the story Jesus’ life is one that has been preached for ages. Throughout the Bible they introduce and use the gospel essentials which include the nature of God, nature of humanity, nature of Jesus, and restoration. The question now may be, “What are these gospel essentials”? Knowing and understanding these gospel essentials help guide us understand God and Jesus’ work. Gospel Essential Beliefs Nature of God In today’s world people have many different beliefs as to who and what God is. In the Christian faith they believe that God reveals himself as three persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is when we hear about the “Trinity” or the triune God, the god in whom or in which there are three equally divine “Persons” (Tuggy 2020). This idea of a triune God is mentioned all throughout the Bible and Tuggy (2020) says that it is the focus that the Bible surrounds its writings. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version, 2001/2016, Gen. 1:1) (GCU 2022). It is here where we first here God being mentioned. He is the creator and he existed before anything else in the universe. God is someone who will never fully be understood, but what we do know is that God has many characteristics that make him special. In Edod. 34:6 and Isa. 6:3 his characteristics include love, goodness, 2
kindness, faithfulness, compassion, justice, and holiness (GCU 2022). Other writings say that he is eternal (Ps. 90:2), infinite (1 Kings 8:27), omnipresent (Ps. 139:7-12), omnipotent (Gen. 17:1), omniscient (ps. 139:1-6), immutable (ps. 102:25-27), and incomprehensible (ps. 145:3) (GCU2022). This is just the surface of who God is and what he can do. He is all powerful and is our protector thru and thru. Nature of Humanity God created us in his image. In Genesis 1: 26-31 it tells us that God made man and women “in the image of God”. This does not mean that we look like God, but more that we are given his characteristics. Some of those include capability to love, ability to reason on a very high level, ability to explore, innate ability to sense right from wrong, ability to explore the universe, and many more. God made us perfectly. He made our physical bodies capable of surviving in the world he created, but he also gave us an immaterial soul. In 1 Cor. 15: 39-49 we learn that there are two types of bodies, “There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another”. The human soul is not immortal nor is it separable, it is wholly material (Holmes 2010). In 2 Cor. 5:8 it can be interpreted that our bodies stay here on earth when we pass, but our souls are reunited with God in heaven, “Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord”. Nature of Jesus When Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden tree, they betrayed Gods one command. After that Original Sin was casted upon humans. It was years later that God brought his only son Jesus to free us from that Original Sin and restore his people. The story of Jesus can be found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. John said this in the opening of his gospel, “In 3
