Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A.
How does this passage from Acts fit within the metanarrative of the Bible? State what
type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation) and
explain why you believe this to be so? Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (150-300
words) in length. It may be good to review chapter 6 in
Everyday Bible Study
to recall
what each of these four themes are about.
The narrative of God collaborating miracles through Paul in Acts 19:11-22 parallels the
Redemption theme in the Bible's metanarrative.
The redemption tale is about redeemed
or saved mankind from its sins. Miracles were done via Paul, according to Acts 19:11-22.
The touch of Paul's clothing would heal people and drive bad spirits away. In addition,
Paul would cast forth demonic spirits by invoking Jesus' name. The same Jesus who
effected salvation at Calvary when he was crucified and died for our sins. Further on in
the passage, it tells of witnesses to the miracles being forced to publicly confess their
crimes and the Lord's message spreading across the country. These witnesses witnessed
God's promises being fulfilled and were rescued as a result. This passage demonstrates
redemption in a variety of ways.
B.
How does your theological principle from Acts 19:11-22 fit with the rest of the Scripture?
This principle is the one you have written out in 1-3 sentences in the Interpretation
Assignment. If your theological principle is a true Biblical principle, it will be reflected
throughout the Scriptures. Where is the theological principle discovered in this New
Testament narrative found elsewhere in the Scriptures? Your explanation should be 1
paragraph (150-300 words) in length. Be specific. Give, explain, and cite your supporting
passage(s) from Scripture.
The theological foundation
"there is true power in the name of Jesus, which cannot be
used by those who do not have a relationship with him"
is obvious in this verse. First, as
Paul drove out demonic spirits, he invoked Jesus' name. According to John 14:13-14,
"Whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son."
If you ask me to do something in my name, I will."
According to Acts 19:15, an evil spirit
said to the Seven Sons,
"Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?"
This
verse demonstrates that if a person does not have a connection with the Lord, using his
name will not provide assistance. Acts 4:12 says,
"And there is salvation in no one else,
for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
Jesus verifies this in John 14:6 when he states,
"I am the way, the truth, and the life." No
one approaches the Father except through me."

C.
How does your theological principle from this passage in Acts reflect the person and
work of Jesus Christ? State and explain at least one way that the theological principle of
this passage correlates with something of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Your
explanation should be 1 paragraph (150-300 words) in length. Be specific. Give, explain,
and cite your supporting passage(s) from Scripture.
In Philippians 2:9-11, it says,
"Therefore God has highly exalted Him and has freely best
owed on Him the name that is above every name, that at the mention of the name of Jesus
every knee shall bow, of those in heaven, those on earth and those under the earth and
that every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the Glory of God the Father."
This passage emphasizes that Jesus has been elevated above all others for a very special
cause. This rationale is stated in Ephesians 1:7.
"In Him we have redemption through His
blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace".
The redeemer is
Jesus. The fact that Jesus is the redeemer reflects God's love for his creation. In the words
of John 3:16,
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
