Introductory Statistics Part 1 (Week 6) Design the Study 1. List the Group Members with Both First and Last Names: Katlin Howes Robin Correa Angie Anderson Rebekah Preston Maryn McMurdie Marcella Velazquez Josh Hamilton Mike Chapman 2. Explain the purpose of your study. Sister Susan Ward Easton (now Susan Easton Black) wrote on the number of times the Savior is mentioned in the Book of Mormon. She found that the Savior is referenced in every 1.7 verses in the Book of Mormon. (This translates to one would see an average (μ) of 0.6 references of the Savior per verse.) Our study is to test Sister Easton's assertion to see if the population mean is different than 0.6.   3. Determine whether this be a Designed Experiment or an Observational Study? Explain. This is an observational study because there is no actual experiment or conditions behind the survey. It is an observational study to observe the number of times the Savior was referenced and whether it was mentioned in 1.7 verses. 4. Identify the response variable(s). (Tip: carefully consider what you are going to observe and record) Determine whether the response variable numeric or categorical. (Lesson 2 Section 4.4) The response variable is Christ mentioned in the scriptures and the quantitative variable is how many times the Savior is mentioned.  5. Identify the population. The population was a random selection of 160 verses in The Book of Mormon. 6. Identify the population parameter of interest.   The population parameter of interest is the population mean.
7. State your Null and Alternative Hypothesis in words and symbols. Ho:  μ = 1.7     Ha : μ   1.7 8. State and Define your Planned Sampling Method. (Lesson 2 Section 4.3) The planned sampling method used 160 Simple Random Samples from the Book of Mormon. 9. How will you apply the planned sampling method? Using the random generator to randomly pull 160 Book of Mormon verses to review and count the number of times the Savior is referred to by name. 10. Explanation on why you chose this type of method. We used this method to collect true data on the number of times the Savior was referred to so that we could test our hypothesis indifferently. Collect the Data 1. What did you learn in Data collection? We learned that not all the scriptures in the sample of 160 had a reference to the Savior. Also, in the data collection process, we learned that the hypothesis was rejected because of the sample mean.   2. Describe how sampling was completed. Sampling was completed by an SRS (Simple random sample) from a population (aka scriptures in the Book of Mormon), which equated to 160 verses in total sampled. Group Leader generated the SRS with the given search engine. Each group member had 20 scriptures that they read and recorded the number of times the Savior was mentioned; then, they recorded it in the Excel spreadsheet. 3. Describe things you did not anticipate. Different names that have multiple meanings. (ie. Lord) and it surprised us how often the Savior was mentioned. There were a lot of scriptures that had a zero for mentions of the Savior. 4. List the Sample Sizes Gathered by Group.  160 verses were generated in total; 20 verses per person in the group. Describe the Data
