Body size is known to be related to reproductive success and the ability to move from one habitat to another. A species of butterfly called Boloria chariclea, which is found in Greenland where the climate is changing, was studied for 16 years between 1996-2013. In this study, the scientists measured average wing length in millimeters for each year. They also recorded the average temperature during the larval growth season for the previous summer in degrees Fahrenheit to serve as the predictor. We will focus only on the data from female butterflies, which is found in the dataset Butterfly. Variables of interest : x = average temperature (degrees Fahrenheit) and y = average wing length (millimeters) Understanding the research: 1. In central Florida, where alligators and humans live in close proximity, it is important to track the location and sizes of alligators. The animals may be spotted from the air, from a boat, or on land. Wildlife experts can accurately estimate the alligator’s length, but they usually want to know the animal’s weight as well. To develop a way to estimate the weight of an alligator, the wildlife researchers measured the lengths (in inches) and weights (in pounds) of 25 captured alligators. Then they used those data to develop a model that would enable them to estimate an alligator’s weight based on its length – something they can guess from a safe distance. Officials hope to use this model to identify alligators that should be relocated because they have grown so large as to pose a threat to humans. Exploratory Data Analysis: Below is simple linear regression output from Minitab. Analysis: 1. In this data set, there is an alligator that was 114 inches long that weighed 197 pounds.
