Assignment 1: Descriptive Statistics 2 Assignment 1: Descriptive Statistics Introduction USA Today published an article on February 15 th , 2019 called “Donald Trump declares national emergency to free up billions of dollars for a border wall”. This article was written by Michael Collins, David Jackson, and John Fritze, and discusses the next step our President has taken to secure funds for the completion of the border wall between the United States and Mexico to prevent illegal crossings. According to Worldstir, the history of the border wall dates back to 1993, when President Clinton mandated the construction on a 13-mile portion of the wall that stretched between San Diego and Tijuana. This 13-mile section was predicted to cost $39 million dollars prior to the build. The next step in the border wall was in 2006, when President Bush signed the “Secure Fences Act” and set up 700 miles of fencing, plus a virtual wall that runs the entire 2,000-mile border. Brookings publishing has advised, in an article, that President Trump has estimated the total cost of the 2,000-mile border wall to be approximately $12 billions dollars, while other members of the government have estimated that it could cost upwards to $70 billion dollars. This is a big difference in estimation and will continue to be a matter of discussion until the correct parameters can be given to the construction companies for a proper estimation to be made. Summary Brookings has questioned, “What is a good time for the President of the United States to declare a national Emergency?” One would think it would be in an actual emergency like an act of war. Our President has done just that, declared a national emergency in order to obtain the

Statistically speaking, according to others in the government, this figure is very low on what it will actual take to complete the wall. Descriptive Statistics This article is using measures of frequency, counting rules, analysis which includes percent’s and frequencies. While doing their analysis, the research on the wall is broken down into gathered data and the data is formed from estimates of deaths on both sides of the border, percentages of drugs carried back and forth, and frequency of illegal crossings every day. Real World Applications This article applies to the real world because the issue of the border wall and the safety of all people involved is a very real and constant subject that has affected everyone. The last government shutdown affected everyone. Our office is a tax and bookkeeping office. We deal with the IRS regularly, and was unable to receive answers while the shut down was in effect. Analysis The authors wrote on this subject because it is one of great importance that affects people all over the world. The data was gathered and reviewed by each writer to ensure their facts were in line with their writing to avoid errors. Using percentages, counting rules, and frequency gives the writers a way to understand all their data. Conclusion
