Section A. Client Overview
DG was 54 when he suffered a stroke in February 2016. The stroke affected the right hemisphere of his brain, this resulted in a difficulty in understanding high level language e.g. jokes, metaphors and extended pieces of text. Right-sided strokes are associated with patients being emotionally labile, confused and impulsive, these characteristics and their impact were considered throughout DG’s care.
Prior to his stroke, he was a carer for his wife, who has dementia. He has a 23 year old daughter. She offered to care for her Mother two nights a week to give DG rest-bite. Instead, DG got a job as a part time cleaner, working on both the two evenings. Since DG’s stroke, his daughter has left work and has become the full time carer of her Mother. This has caused extra strain on the family relationships due to financial worries. His daughter reported that DG was always the ‘joker’ of the family. From this reported information, it became clear that jokes and sarcasm were a major part of DG’s personality and identity.
When DG was first admitted to hospital, the damage from the stroke seemed significantly worse. His speech was unintelligible, the oral stage of his swallow was slow and he was immobile. During the acute stages, DG was very agitated and struggled with fatigue. A combination of early intervention and spontaneous recovery helped DG to progress rapidly. Although his oral transit of food was still slower than pre-stroke, assessment
Cerebral vascular accident or a stroke is the destruction of brain substance, resulting from thrombosis, intracranial hemorrhage, or embolism, which causes vascular insufficiency. In addition, it is an area of the brain denied blood and oxygen that is required and damage is done to a part of the cells. The effect of the patient depends upon where the damage occurs and the severity of the stroke.
Strokes are commonly associated with old age, symptoms and awareness are often unnoticed in young adults due to ambiguity about strokes.
A stroke is a life changing disease and sudden attack of weakness to one side of the body resulting from a interruption to the flow of blood going to the brain that can be a minor attack and resolved in a few days or major attack leaving the person with physical disabilities and cognitive deficit (McFerran 2008). Therefore, stroke can affect the quality of life of an individual from the lack of communication, mobility and independence and intern can cause one to become depressed. This essay is concerning the case of Mr. Alfred Smith who was
The health issue that this artifact discusses is the significance of knowing and recognizing the warning signs of a stroke. The American Heart Association has made it their mission to provide unlimited health information and research in the hopes of eliminating cardiovascular diseases as well as helping society in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “Stroke is the number 5 cause of death and a leading cause of
A stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the cerebral arteries, those blood vessels that carry blood to the brain. A stroke occurs when one of those blood vessels in the brain is obstructed or ruptures flooding the brain with blood. Depriving blood and oxygen to the brain results in those immediate cells death, causing the brain not to function properly. Once parts of the brain stop functioning, it can directly affect the areas of the body controlled (1).
Clients suffering from stroke have slow speech loss of memory, speechless one side of their body paralysed which cause restriction to their movement.
Ischaemic stroke is a serious neurological condition in which a blood clot stops blood flow to the brain and for which immediate action is required. It is the fourth cause of death in Western society, causing 87% of all strokes, and also results in long-term disability among survivors (Bunevicius et al., 2013). In the United States, about 800,000 strokes occur each year, and approximately six million Americans are living with neurological deficits caused by ischaemic strokes (Duong, 2012). Therefore, neuroradiological imaging has become a major section in radiology departments.
The objective of the present study was to assess the extent of stroke knowledge, specifically regarding the risk factors and warning signs of stroke. Thus, it is important to be well understood about stroke, the risk factors and the warning signs. Furthermore, this review will discuss in details about the two risk factors, stress and obesity that are significant among the studied population. This is followed by the review on the state of stroke knowledge and its importance from the previous studies among varied populations.
Strokes are one of the major causes of immobility in seniors. Recovery largely depends on the extent of the brain injury and the length of time before treatment. Nonetheless, most seniors require the assistance of a caregiver and this mainly requires planning and organization. Here are some ways you can take care of a senior post -stroke
Stroke is known as cerebrovascular accident or brain attack. It occurs as a result of sudden impairment of cerebral circulation in one or more blood vessel. This lead to diminish oxygen supply and commonly causes serious damage in the brain tissue (Nettina et al, 2013). Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide and the fourth in the UK (Stroke Association, 2015). Yearly, approximately 152000 people in the UK have a stroke, that represent 11% of all deaths in England and Wales (Hutchinson and Wilson, 2013). For the enormous majority of 67% of stroke survivors in the UK, one of the first difficulties on the path to recovery is swallowing dysfunction (Dworzynski, 2013). 50% of stroke survivors experience dysphagia in the acute phase
Jillian great post. I agree that it appears this patient has presented with a left hemisphere stroke. The evidence that supports this decision is that the patient was slumped to the right and unable to speak. Often times with a left hemisphere stroke a patient will experience numerical skills, written language, and reasoning (North Carolina Stroke Association, n.d.). Depression is also often noticed after stroke (Illumistream Health, n.d.). For left hemisphere stroke patients some of the depression may be coming from not being able to communicate as well as prior to the stroke.
Cerebral stroke, the second leading cause of death, each year affects nearly 15 million people above the age of 60 years, worldwide, is manifested through several mechanisms such as excitotoxicity, over production of free radicals, inflammation and apoptosis that cause severe brain damage and may ultimately lead to death. Since currently available stroke therapies are not much effective; therefore, it is an urgent need to test and develop some novel and more effective treatment strategies for the efficient management of cerebral stroke. Fortunately, recent reports showed that plant-derived flavonoids have potential neuroprotective actions against an array of neurodegenerative diseases including the stroke. For example, the standardized extracts
Mr. Comer was admitted to his local community hospital for respite care. He has suffered multiple, acute strokes in the past, which has left him with severe disabilities. These include paralysis rendering him immobile, aphasia (speech loss) and dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). He relies on carers for all normal activities required for daily living (Roper et al 1996) and is advised to have a pureed diet and thickened fluids.
A cerebrovascular accident more commonly known as a stroke or brain attack is the term used to describe the sudden death of brain cells in a localized area due to inadequate blood flow. In order to woke the brain needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients. This supply is carried to the brain
Stroke affects everybody differently, and it is difficult to say how much of a recovery is possible. Many stroke survivors experience the most dramatic recovery during their stay in hospital in the weeks after their stroke.
