A Career In Health Information Technology

The purpose of this article is to examine an innovative health information technology based approach that is tailored to educate families about pediatric obesity and the associated health behaviors. It discusses the importance of advancing and improving health by utilizing innovative methods, such as health information technology (HIT). HIT systems are technology-based structures that allow access and exchange of information, computerization and improvement of decision making, and facilitation of behavior modifications to encourage healthier lifestyles.

For my Health Science 1 class we were instructed to choose 3 different careers. The careers to be chosen were a health care career, a career of disinterest, and a career we would like to pursue. I aspire to be a Cardiovascular Perfusionist because it would feel great to be able to prevent someone from dying pre- maturely. I dislike the real estate field because they don't make much money and they do entirely too much work for not much profit. I choose Neurology as my health care career because I like learning about the brain, how it works and how and why people get mental disorders.

Time flows like a river and you find yourself not thinking the way you used to as a child. As I grew older, my dreams and goals changed as well as my mindset on how to achieve those aspirations. Mercyhurst University’s Public Health Program is the main step toward helping me achieve my career goal of becoming a Registered Health Information Technician. I’d like to define success as many achievements and accomplishments, as well as the coming of knowledge for that which was unknown to one’s self. Therefore, there should never be an ending to a success story. It was when I graduated as a medical assistant that sparked the realization to what field I was most interested in.

Skills I need to enhance: brushing up of Microsoft Excel skills, completion of a Master’s degree in health care administration with an AHIMA accredited university. Once these goals are attained, I can earn a Registered Health Information Administrator certification (RHIA) or a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification, and current work experience in health care administration.

My Ultimate goal is to become a Medical reimbursement Technician, because it’s a challenge; challenging myself is what I like to do. To be able to perform this job well you have to have the training, education, skills, knowledge, experience, communication skills, and customer services skills. This career field is very demanding and the availability for it is high. It is very critical when performing this job because with the important information that will be handled.

I would like to learn more about the healthcare industry and also serve patients/customers in a most efficient and professional manner. I would also like to hone in on my superb clerical, organization, and communication skills by being able to constantly use these traits within the position.

Using the SMART method, my long term goal is to continue my work as a CNA while applying for healthcare administrator positions. I would like to work as an administrator for at least 3 years for any medical setting. While working, I will be looking into ways on how I can own and operate a home healthcare agency. According to Marak, (2017), I really don’t need to have experience in the medical industry; I would just need to have the passion for providing care, the marketing savvy, an understanding of business knowledge, and integrity. With my CNA experience, along with my other work experiences, I am half way there.

Since the health care industry is constantly growing and changing, the skills I develop must be able to adapt accordingly. To ensure that my skills can adapt appropriately, I can receive training in the field and learn the new skills needed along with studying new material. I can advance in my field by taking new courses to continue to grow and develop new skills that will be necessary. The courses can revolve around administration, management, leadership, and other topics that will be beneficial. Since the Internet contains everything about changes I can look up on the new skills and find new ways to adapt by doing research online. The skills are necessary to ensure that patients and residents are treated properly and the quality care continues to improve.

The role and responsibilities of a Health Information Technician (HIT) also known as a Medical Records Technician include maintaining the medical information system of a healthcare facility in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include organizing and coding patient records, recording information on patient records, the gathering of statistical and research data, monitoring information to ensure confidentiality and medical coding for billing purposes. Technicians communicate on a regular basis with physicians and other healthcare professionals to obtain information and clarify diagnosis. There are several different institutions that will help you prepare for your chosen career path. Kaplan University is one of those institutions. Kaplan provides the needed courses, and informs you on the certifications that you will need to acquire. A lot of institutions do not have the proper accreditation to take you further on your journey, unfortunately Kaplan does not have that problem. My chosen career path is to be Medical Records and Health Information Technician. The journey started with packing my bags, and getting my certificate for Medical Billing/Coding. I started my journey on October 2015, and finished this portion of it on August 2016. On September 2016, I decided to continue my journey by repacking my bags, and going back for my bachelors in healthcare administration. There are many
