First I plan to find a problem or a gap in practice. I will find an observational problem during my preceptorship. Next, I will do a literature review. The literature review will be used to validate and evaluate my observational problem. Next, I will conduct a study framework in which I may use a previously constructed theory.

In May 2007 I co-founded this enterprise with my colleague, David Garofalo, a national dental corporation owning and operating dental practices throughout Australia. I served as the CEO for over 5 years, building the organisation from the ground up experiencing rapid growth. I was responsible for dental practices and clinics in over 60 locations across metro and regional Australia and a sophisticated head office and operations call centre. Setting a vision is incredibly important. Because the people impacted by the change are aware of exactly what the goals are and what is expected of them. If it is a compelling vision and people buy into it then it is much easier to make the change happen but if people don’t agree it makes the process much harder. Also some people don’t want to change how they do things and want to continue doing things exactly how they were in the past (this is a problem). The way that the vision was created is by providing both high level vision statements (long term goals) as well as much more tactical and strategic guidelines for what to do in the short run. The vision is then provided to the team very often and consistently through both emails and town halls from senior management as well as from projects and day to do workload from the directors which ties the work to the long term vision. It is important that people understand how what they are doing is connected to the larger goals. It is also important to acknowledge and reinforce that change takes time and that there is a long term view on success.
An effectively communicated vision is a valuable management tool for enlisting the commitment of company personnel to actions that get the company moving in the intended direction.
