In this mixed method approach, there were various types of data used such as questionnaires and surveys regarding if children took any prescription medication related to ADD, ADHD, or hyperactivity. There was an analysis investigating whether and to what extent minority children diagnosed with ADHD were taking medication for the disorder. I one particular study participants were asked to answer the questions with a “yes” or “no” response. According to the data parents answered that 650 of 780 children with an ADHD diagnosis use prescription medication for ADHD (Morgan, Staff, Hillemeier, Farkas, & Maczuga, 2013). Results revealed that there were some relations to behavioral risk indicators of ADHD, as well as academic achievement regarding children who are African Americans and other ethnic groups rather than children who are white to receive an ADHD diagnosis in the United States during childhood. Later in the study evidence showed off how this has changed over the course of years and gradually, it increased through third grade and declined thereafter. This ADHD diagnoses began to increase in the younger years of childhood for white children, as the other racial group remains constant. The probabilities of diagnosis showed to be lower for Hispanics, and children of other ethnicities. Surprisingly, it was the lowest for African Americans. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a condition many children and young adult are diagnosed with today. ADHD is caused by the lack of focus, being overactive, or not being able to control certain behavior. There are many symptoms shown that can lead towards the diagnoses of ADHD, but there are no test that can be used to diagnose the disorder in children and young adults. As more people seem to develop the issue, the central question of, “Is the disorder even needed?”, comes to mind. One side of the argument sides with the many people that believe this deficiency can have a major impact on ones life, effecting their social and learning skills and medicine is highly advised. The other side believes that it is all psychology behind the diagnosis. This side believes that the medicine prescribed is being abused. Many say kids are taking these drugs such as adderall and vyvance to increase and help focus their behavior. It is believed that this is an issue because the kids that are taking these medications are kids that may not need them. Since there is technically no official test that leads to ADHD, it can basically be diagnosed towards anyone. Being a teenager in high school, the temptation to not abuse these kinds of drugs only increases throughout high school. If the government were to prevent society from being able to be prescribed this drug it would have a huge effect on American culture. The legitimacy of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has been a controversial topic since it’s recognition as a part of the DSM-III, although there is copious research proving how many children are affected by this disorder. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, ADHD may affect around 3-5 percent of children. Psychiatrist Sami Timimi and psychologist Nick Radcliffe believe that ADHD does not exist and that the rapid increase of children taking stimulant medication to control it since 1996 is astonishing. Timimi and Radcliffe assert that it is a disorder made up by Western culture in order to explain away normal behavior in adolescents. They claim that normal adolescent behavior is viewed as unacceptable in today’s self-indulgent society. Children who are inattentive have difficulty focusing on any one thing and may get bored with a task after only a few minutes. Children who are hyperactive show high levels of physical activity, almost always seeming to be in motion. Children who are impulsive have difficulty curbing their reactions and don’t do a good job of thinking before they act.
Most children tend to be at least a little hyper when they are younger. Some are more hyper, or may have more energy, while others could have problems staying focused. Just because they can be hyper sometimes does not mean that they have a disorder. ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. ADHD is when the frontal lobe of the brain, which controls one’s emotions, behavior, and judgement, may not work as it should. If one thinks them or their child has ADHD, they should look into some causes and symptoms of ADHD before coming to a conclusion about it.

Children who are diagnosed with ADHD struggle with managing behavior in school environments. As research has shown, students have difficulty paying attention and can be disruptive in class. This often leads to a decline in their academics and can hurt future academic achievements. There are a number of tools, programs, contracts, and classes that are available to students with ADHD. Along with a lack of attention and an abundance of hyperactivity, “twenty to thirty percent of ADHD children have an associated learning disorder of reading, spelling, writing, and arithmetic” (Daley & Birchwood, 2010).
