Good Essays

Adnan Syed was a well respected student among his high school, but was accused for the murder of his past girlfriend, Hae. Do you think he is guilty or innocent? Serial, narrated by Sarah Koenig, investigates a case about a murder on January 13, 1999 located in Baltimore, Maryland. A high schooler named Hae Min Lee was found 2-3 weeks later after her disappearance in Leakin Park by the maintenance worker Mr. S, who managed to see her when he went into the park to “urinate”. Before that, Jay, Adnan’s ex-best friend, was recorded and put on Serial about how Adnan told him that he was going to murder Hae at what time, and what place Jay’s morals were then questioned when asked why he failed to forewarn Hae.Jay’s story might’ve been true, but …show more content…

Adnan had an alibi, Asia McClain, who said that he was at the library after school, during the period of time when the state claimed he killed Hae. So, either the state’s chronology is wrong or that the alibi was lying just to help Adnan. The quote illustrates the letter that Asia McClain sent Adnan, “Dear Adnan-- I hope I spelled it right. I'm not sure if you remember talking to me in the library on January 13, but I remember chatting with you." (Episode 1: The Alibi p. 18). When Asia McClain wrote this letter, though it doesn’t have a exact time, continues to emphasize that Adnan is innocent because the state announced that Adnan was guilty, but since Adnan has an alibi, then there is proof that Adnan is innocent. Adnan also had a affidavit, a written statement confirmed by oath or affirmation, that was written by Asia McClain. “Asia wrote out an affidavit on the spot. In it, she says she and Adnan spoke for about 15 to 20 minutes while she was waiting for her boyfriend to give her a ride. Quote, "We left around 2:40," unquote. Remember, Hae is supposed to be dead by 2:36. And then, the kicker-- "No attorney has ever contacted me about January 13, 1999 and the above information."” (Episode 1: The Alibi p. 19). It is plausible that this key detail wasn’t mentioned at …show more content…

The state connected pieces of evidence leading to the conclusion that Adnan was mad because Hae ditched him, leaving him with nothing, so he just kills her. The state said that Adnan was mad at Hae for leaving him with nothing, ending up killing her, and that Adnan was two-sided, “So Adnan had to keep his relationship with Hae secret. The state used this against him in two ways. First, they argued, he put everything on the line-- his family, his relationships at the mosque-- to run around with this girl. So that when she broke up with him eight months later, he was left with nothing, and he was outraged. He couldn't take it, and he killed her. And the second way they used it, as they said-- look at what a liar he is, how duplicitous. He plays the good Muslim son at home and at the mosque, but look what he was up to.” (Episode 1: The Alibi pg 6). Adnan had to keep Hae a secret, which the state used as supporting details that helps support their claim that he got angry for leaving him with nothing. This is very opinionated, showing the state’s opinion towards the case doesn’t provide solid evidence that Adnan really was mad, I can see why he would be mad at his parents, but not Hae. It wasn’t even Hae’s fault that they broke up, it was his parents
