On-the-Job Training (OJT): In this extensively used training method, the supervisor gives important instructions to the newly appointed worker as regards the manner in which job is to be performed. Thereafter, he is shown the machines and tools and the manner in which they are to be used. With such limited information and/ or guidance, the person has to start the work on trial and error basis. Thereafter, he has to adjust himself with the job. He can ask his difficulties to co-workers and take guidance from them. The supervisor also gives helping hand to him in the first few weeks. The advantage of on the job training is that it is easy, simple, quick and economical. It can be used conveniently in the case of simple jobs at the lower levels, where special training facilities, instructions and longer period training are not required for training purpose. The disadvantage of on the job training is that this training method is not scientific. It fails to give systematic training to workers. This type of training is by co-workers who are not trained properly. Even the atmosphere in the factory is not congenial for training. Such periodical evaluation would provide useful information about the effectiveness of training as well as about design of future training programmes. Even the cost effectiveness can be estimated through evaluation. Finally, evaluation of training is needed in order to raise the effectiveness of training. Remedial measures can be adopted in regard to weak points in the training process. Credibility of training is considerably enhanced when it is proved that the organisation got good dividend out of its training and development programme.
