I, Nimra Khan, am an Early Childhood Education student, who got the opportunity to work with children in a Kindergarten setting. By getting the chance to observe children and interact with them, I learned a great deal about how important appreciative inquiry is. It taught me to be objective and open-minded, and how crucial it is to acknowledge and appreciate that each child is unique in its own way. Children are highly underestimated in their abilities and skills and it is important to recognize how intelligent they are in different ways by detailed observations and interactions. Unlike any other role, working with children requires you to be present at all times, because it is the spontaneous moments that occur that matter the most. Interacting with adults can leave such a great impact on a child, and this works both ways. In my setting, one thing that was undermined was how necessary it is to collaborate regularly with the families of children, which I will discuss further on in this paper.
Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory describes the range of interacting influences that affect a developing child (Papalia….pg 32). The contextual systems identified by him are the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem and chronosystem. The first four systems are like hollow cylinders that fit inside one another, encasing the developing person. The fifth, the chronosystem, adds the dimension of time. (Papalia….
