Emma, a senior at a southeastern university, was recorded having sex with a brother who passed the video around to the other brothers at his house (Robbins and Florsheim 146). After that event, Emma’s sorority sisters turned their backs on her (Robbins and Florsheim 146). Sororities lure freshmen in to give them a home base lifestyle and sense of belonging (Robbins and Florsheim 146). Many chapters are supposed to teach leadership skills and encourage community service, but some chapters become out of hand when dealing with initiating people (Robbins and Florsheim 146). Becky, a junior in a North Carolina sorority, admits, “It is the system of everyone having to keep up this image that they are the best, the prettiest, the most fun” (qtd.
Little did I know, the incredible role models of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Ms. Nicki Harper and Ms. Loretta Bookman, wanted to stress the importance of being a lady, a leader and a well-rounded individual. These ladies and the Delta GEMS program influenced my curiosity so much that toward the end of high school, I researched and learned more about Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I learned the members exemplify 3 of my core values: service, leadership and excellence.
At the start of the new school year, Millicent Arnold, a typical teenage girl, receives an invitation to join the elite and exclusive girls’ sorority at Lansing High School. Before she becomes an official member however, Millicent must demonstrate she is fit to join the sorority by finishing the initiation process: a series of ridiculous and rigorous tasks that pushes her to her limits. During a mission, Millicent discovers the nasty truth and reality of the “prefect” sorority at her high school, and ultimately decides that being herself is most important and rejects entering the sorority altogether.
By establishing a set core of values, they were able to further in developing a closer hypothesis on why fraternities are more likely to view women as a commodity. By that Martin and Hummer (1989: 463) mean that "fraternities use women for their benefit, as bait for new members, servers of brother's needs, and as sexual prey." This is a pattern they saw in fraternities that added to their idea that fraternities are more likely to commit acts that could lead to gang rape. They also noticed a pattern of cohesiveness among fraternities.
The varying reactions of sorority girls in different settings will likely yield several different forms of measurements, and while wide-ranging field notes and descriptions will be a useful part of the data there will also be an attempt to make certain measurements of more quantitative data to serve for direct and concrete analysis across a variety of factors. Behaviors and behavior rates exhibited by individual sorority girls or "sisters," specific behavior types or rates seen more prominently in specific sororities, changes in behavior from situation to situation (again tracked by specific individuals, by specific sorority affiliation, and in the study population as a whole), and types of behavior that are specific to certain scenarios will all be observed and measured in addition to the more general qualitative descriptions that the data collection methods will produce and from which other results can be assessed. Through these measurements, an appropriate and fair assessment of sorority girls' behavior in a variety of situations and across several factors can be assessed and analyzed in a mathematical fashion rather than simply through qualitative description, adding validity to the research.
When one first thinks of Greek life or a sorority the only thing that comes to mind is the social aspect. Most people don’t think of sororities as social institutions that envelop their own culture, with mannerisms, languages and customs that are unique to each individual organization. However, these institutions promote a common set of values that enable members to become connected in a way that has a more profound meaning than just social interaction. Greek organizations are good examples of how institutions can affect and be affected by social status and roles within the collegiate community. They are also a prime example of how race, class and gender can affect a social setting in both positive and negative manners.
Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Incorporated purpose is to be of service to all mankind dealing with critical issues in communities domestically and internationally. What I have grown to understand an envision a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to be, I accredit largely to the ladies of the Gamma Theta chapter. This has the result of attending many of the chapter’s events during my time at Hampton thus far. One of my favorite events was a screening of a documentary Girls Rising. I learned to appreciate every opportunity to learn and gain knowledge because in some parts of the world girls are restricted from receiving an education. A
This definition Ross provides and informs one with the true and deep meanings of what the “sisterhood” may define sorority. A sister may tell one that a sorority may appear as a partying thing, but in reality a sorority is a group that gives back to the community while having fun at the same time. Many resources do not talk about sororities in general. The resources mentioned a special group called the Divine Nine. Together these nine societies make up what is known as the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) (Barker 17). The NPHC contributes abundantly to the community from: improving health care, raising scholarship funds, and promoting literacy to working for women’s rights, aiding the NAACP, and organizing social justice and civil rights, … (Fine 2). There are only four societies in the Divine Nine that are sororities. These were the first sororities formed on college campuses and have successfully made a massive impact in every community.
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and
When entering college many students have fantasies of joining Greek organizations and other groups that are meant to encourage unity among people that share a common interest. One being that in the world of colligate cheerleading, holds a “mock” sorority, named Cheer Phi. Cheer Phi makes naïve cheerleaders believe it represents the true essence of sisterhood, team work and leadership every quality a great cheerleading squad holds. However, in reality despite a spectator’s point of view so far my opinion opposes those values indefinitely.
Initially, a sorority can be broken down into its classical views and romantic views, but it does contain more romantic. A sorority is an organization, and with any organization you must form a foundation with rules, which is apart of the classic views. “The classic mode, by contrast, proceeds by reason and by laws---which are themselves underlying forms of thought and behavior.” (ZMM, 85-86). This foundation that they create will help an organization establish everything they want to achieve. For Alpha Chi Omega our foundation starts with our bylaws. Our bylaws contain all the rules that our members must follow in order to stay in good standing with the organization. If
Joining a sorority is not just four for years but for life. Going through a week-long process of meeting thousands of girls can be intense, overwhelming but intriguing and exciting as well. Recruitment to many is known as a terrifying process where girls come from all over with matching shirts, bright smiles and dreams that at the end of the week they will receive the white envelope that incases the 4x6 card with the sororities crest inviting them into their sisterhood. By preparing ahead of time, which includes building a resume, searching for recommendation letters and extensive research on each chapter, sorority recruitment doesn’t have to be an intimating process.
As much as society has grown over the years there are still quite a few people who are bothered by the sexual orientation of the LGBTQ community. Emily Welter, of Butler University, constructed a qualitive study at a Midwestern University to better understand the social environment of the sorority and fraternity houses as it pertains to the acceptance of sexual diversity. It presses on issues such as: gender norms and perceptions of sexuality, the impact of sexual orientation, and the general decisions to join a Greek Fraternity or Sorority. The importance of this study is to see if there is an act of discrimination happening, whether it is intentional or unintentional.
In order to get information for my paper, I interviewed someone with a position of authority within Tri Delta. Her name is Danielle, and she is the new member educator. The first thing I learned about Tri Delta is that it is more than just letters on a shirt, songs and chants, a gold pin, socials, rituals, an obligation, or a way of life. “Being in a sorority is about learning about people and being able to give without expecting a return. Tri Delta has allowed me to find lifelong friends and find confidence in myself as well as in my sisters,” Danielle explained. After hearing her explanation, I couldn’t agree more. Danielle also told me that the close relationships are her favorite part. “My favorite part about being in Tri Delta is the sisterhood.
The last point to what it means to be in a sorority is, in order to be part of such a movement females are usually asked to do something that they are not used to doing. Females who have not known each other for a long period of time are asked to share their deepest darkest secrets with who we can call almost absolute strangers. Aside from verbal embarrassment these females are also most likely to engage in some sort of out of the norm activities which could result in a huge bust to their reputation. To be a part of such movement females usually engage in these activities initially before being accepted into a sorority. Even after being accepted there are still rules and guidelines they must follow in order to maintain a sorority
The techniques that are used by all fraternities and sororities are called rushing and hazing. Rushing is the act of popularizing a given fraternity or sorority to attract new members. As mentioned in the introduction, the alternate forms of rushing cover a large spectrum, but they all have the same goal: be the best to attract the best. Hazing is another variable method closely aligned with fraternities and sororities, but hazing for different fraternities and sororities can have vastly different outcomes. Hazing, in its most simple and basic form, is the imposition of strenuous or complicated tasks as a form of initiation. In contrast to popular belief, a lot of normal activity is considered hazing. For example, a college football team might tell the freshman that they are responsible for cleaning up loose garbage on the field after a practice. As mild as this example might be, hazing can be taken to an extreme and often has poor outcomes that can severely damage the psyche of an individual. However, a sense of tradition and continuation continually inspires hazing among social groups, but fraternities and sororities especially. Hazing has become a form a bonding that allow new initiates to become closer as a brotherhood or sisterhood; these two both being the most important part of fraternities and sororities. To create an everlasting bond, Greek organizations promote ultimate a familial intimacy that is unparalleled by other social groups. It is in this strive for brotherhood and sisterhood that mistakes are made and people begin to
