Location and childhood are two major components that make up someone's identity. A person is shaped by the world around them and how they see themselves within it. For Marjane in Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi, Vincent Paronnaud), this is rather difficult as her identity has been formed both through her life in Iran and the liberal, western political views held by her family. The film portrays her childhood in Iran and her teen years in Austria, through a simplistic form that show the differences in ideologies and the universality of their problems. This paper aims to examine the contribution of the form of the film, the style of the film, and the plot in showing the comparison and universality between western and eastern ideologies and the formation of an adult in a world of these two ideologies. Persepolis alternates between the present and the past in the life of Marjane, telling the story of her childhood years in Iran, her teen years in Austria, and finally her adulthood and realizing that she does not quite fit in in either location. This narrative style allows reflection from adult Marji, who is recounting her stories. The viewer must recognize that many thoughts are not child-Marji’s, but adult-Marji’s after growth and reflection. Therefore, when her childhood is being recounted, this is the product of years of memories that are contributing to the retelling of this one time.
