The book Leading From the Second Chair discusses what it is like to lead from the second chair. This was a semi-new concept for me. I have always heard of leadership and know that it is something special, however, I never thought of leading from the second chair. This phrase means being a leader but not the person in charge. This is something that is foreign to me. I have always though that a leader is in charge of their section and other leaders are in charge of their section and eventually they come together to put it all together. However, though going through the experience of my internship and going through this book and leadership class I have learned that this is not the case. When you lead from the second chair you are

Norman, in his book, Emotional Design: “Why we love (or hate) everyday things”, he analyzes the design elements in products. Norman’s purpose is to show why products we use should not be hard to use but attractive and fun. He explains in tremendous detail how the design of an object affects a person emotionally. He argues that in order for an object to be more successful it must be more attractive to the users. Norman uses concrete evidence to back up his argument. He employs the use of imagery, diction and tone in order to convey to his readers the idea of emotional design.

At Rhode Island School of Design, within the Industrial Design major, creativity abounds, manifesting in the 3-D models, professors, and the students’ orthographic drawings. When redesigning a mixer for the Pre-College Program final, I created numerous designs focusing on various subjects: aesthetic, ergonomics, and specific demographics. Each one has its pros and cons, each one has its special feature and each one fulfills its purpose and the teacher’s requirements. The process of discovering a new way to answer the same question over and over again yields endless possibilities. Constantly refining my product and playing with new ideas before falling asleep is an adventure, despite some sleepless nights due to the excitement. Besides the actual application of the practice, the history of industrial design fascinates me as well. How were products designed in different ages, in different countries? Why was aesthetic placed over ergonomics in terms of importance when creating this chair? How has visual language in these products developed through the
