Animal testing is defined as procedures performed on living animals for purposes of research in basic biology. This testing should no longer be permitted due to the thousands of animals that have been tortured and killed during these experiments. Animals involved in these tests are poisoned, blinded, and killed every year in outdated product tests for cosmetics, personal-care product, household-cleaning products, and even fruit juices. Do we really want to inflict such terrible pain onto these innocent animals just for our benefit? The use of animals in scientific experiments in the UK can be traced back at least as far as the 17th century with Harvey’s experiments on numerous animal species aiming to demonstrate blood circulation. …show more content…
In 1997, researchers Joseph and Charles Vacanti grew a human “ear” seeded from implanted cow cartilage cells on the back of a living mouse to explore the possibility of fabricating body parts for plastic and reconstructive surgery. Many people would think that it was just a mouse and this is not a big deal. However, it is a big deal. This is only the story of one mouse. There are thousands of mice out there that are being tortured in these experiments along with many other animals. They are being humiliated and tortured due to these heinous tests (Animal Testing). Objectives against animal testing have been present virtually throughout the history of animal testing. However, as more companies emerged throughout the mid-late 19th century, the number of animals used in tests increased along with the number of tests themselves. This rapid increase led to the development of numerous agencies aimed at stopping animal testing. Abuses of animals during testing were well publicised throughout the 1990s and served to create a public frenzy and anger towards animal testing. The increased attention towards animal testing led up to the ban on animal testing for cosmetics in 1998 within Britain (Background and History). People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is one group that has led the way in animal rights campaigns as well as spurring on the creation of many other groups. Arson attacks and violence became a reality for those who performed animal
There has been a lot of animal testing in the United States and thousands of animals already have been killed. In research and testing, animals are subjected to experiments that can include everything from testing new drugs, poisoning for toxicity testing, burning skin, causing brain damage, implanting electrodes into the brain, maiming, blinding, and other painful and invasive procedures. Animal testing should not be allowed to proceed because millions of animals are getting killed, the results aren't always right, and it is more expensive to test it on animals.
Protesting has been going around the world for many of years. Throughout many years of people boycotted agents a situation they believe, if a wrong or right. One of the biggest areas on where people gather around and protest is when they’re fighting agents animals testing. As well as the years has pasted on protesting on animals, it became more sires in increased in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Many cosmetics companies been testing on animals throughout the years there is also many that have not. The cosmetics line LUSH has been fighting over animals testing for over thirty years and will continue to fight for their right according to the company. When LUSH had first started the company had divided they didn 't ever wanted to test their product on animal. Not only fighting agents animals testing LUSH is also ego friendly; everything they use its plants, oil, and recycle. Since LUSH having to be agents animal testing, policies had created to work with the companies of cosmetics to end the cruelty of animals. The LUSH company say “ This can be done without animal testing …” and it true. LUSH is a company that all there product dills with ones skin to make them fell and look beautiful. If LUSH can test their products other than animals and still make your still looking good then, other cosmetics companies can do the same.
For many years, the field of science has used animals in medical experiments worldwide, because of this innocent animals are being killed everyday. They are being tested with new drugs, new treatments, and by many makeup companies. Connecticut recently celebrated the passage of the “Beagle Freedom Law”, a law that requires laboratories to work with charities and rescue groups to find homes for research cats and dogs. Animals are being tested so humans do not have to be but animal tests do not reliably predict results in human beings, although animals are the closest thing to humans. Most experiments involving animals are flawed, wasting the lives of innocent animal subjects. Over 100 million animals suffer a year from testing. Testing animals is a lot more expensive than alternative methods and it is wasting government research dollars. Animal testing is not only a bad idea, but it is also inhuman and it should not be tolerated. The FDA should stop allowing animal testing. An animal does not give out the same results on a test than a human would.
Throughout history, beginning as early as 500 BC, animals have been used to test out products that will later be utilized by humans (“Animal Testing” 4), what isn’t publicly discussed about is the way it will leave the animals after the process is done. Many innocent rabbits, monkeys, mice, and even popular pets such as dogs are harmed during the testing application of cosmetics, medicine, perfumes, and many other consumer products (Donaldson 2). Nevertheless, there are many people whom support the scandal because "it is a legal requirement to carry out animal testing to ensure they are safe and effective” for human benefit (Drayson). The overall question here is should it even be an authorized form of experimentation in the United States, or anywhere else? The fact of the matter is that there are alternatives to remove animals out of the equation for good (“Alternatives to Animal Testing” 1). They are cheaper, and less invasive than the maltreatment of the 26 million innocent animals that are subjected to the heartlessness of testing each year (“Animal Testing” 4). With all things considered, animal testing should be looked upon as animal cruelty due to the harsh effects from the many products tested on the innocent.
Should animal testing be a research method in today's society? This has been a rising topic of today’s society, especially in the United States. Many would support this question as it has been used as a research method for scientific and commercial products to ensure safety for humans when they receive the final product. However, others would argue against animal testing due to its immorality of the researcher’s actions towards the animals as well inaccurate results received from the studies. While animal testing has benefited medical science in the past, but using animal testing today is seen to many as cruel and inhumane due to the rise of alternative testing strategies that result in fewer expenses and less damaging to animal kind.
Many people have a pet in which they would never want to get hurt. Each year in the United States, over seventy million animals are hurt and killed due to scientific research. Many brands have taken the pledge to become cruelty free, but there are still multiple brands that are continuing to use animals to test their products. Animal testing should be banned because it is cruel, often ineffective, can not detect for many diseases that humans are exposed to, and can be unsafe due to the differences between animals and humans.
Imagine yourself trapped in a cage, engulfed by darkness, the feeling of dread the only thing standing by your side. Every day you tremble in fear of what new twist those lab coats have in store for you. You lost your faith that you will be saved long ago and that your destiny is to die in this forsaken cage. This is what animals used for experimentation go through on almost daily. Throughout the last few centuries, millions of animals have undergone many cruel and stress inducing tests and experiments. Nowadays, many studies show that using animals for testing is unnecessary and that scientists should not have any real need for it. In this paper, I will show how the use of animals in labs is unnecessary by explaining the history of experimentation,
Less than 2% of human illnesses are ever seen in animals. Over 98% never affect animals. 92% of drugs passed by animal tests fail when first tried on humans because they’re useless, dangerous or both. Humans and animals are very similar to one another. Like humans they have similar systems in the body and at times it tends to react the same a human would. The animals that are used in research are mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, primates, dogs, cats, cows, fish, and birds. Almost all of these animals are used to try to make human life better and to progress in the world of medicine. The remaining animals are used as test dummies for all other products. Hundreds of thousands of animals are experimented on one another to figure out the
Poliovirus is a contagious infection that rampaged through the United States about fifty years ago, with the possibility of leading to lifetime paralysis. In the 1950s, Jonas Salk and his team developed a polio vaccine that prevented the outbreak of polio (“Polio Vaccine”). During his pursuit of the creation of the vaccine, mice, monkeys and rats were used to test the side effects and effectiveness of the new vaccine. Without it, polio would have become a worldwide malady. Animal testing is the procedure of using various animals to research for new drugs, vaccines or cosmetics. However, there are many opponents against animal testing on the basis that it is unethical and that it is harmful to the subjects of the research. Nonetheless,
When people think of cheating they think of copying off a smart student in school, or having somebody else do their homework. However in the livestock industry cheating happens in many other ways. Obviously, the main goal when showing an animal is to win, or make the sale at their respective shows. How far will exhibitors actually go to win a show though? In recent years there has been controversy at many major livestock shows over drug testing, and animals testing hot for illegal drugs which means when tested there was traces found of illegal substances within the animal. This is not the only way people have been caught cheating though; some exhibitors have switched animals with another exhibitor prior to the show. Showing an animal at the county fair or state fair is supposed to be an educational experience where kids learn responsibility and hard work, not getting placed last in class because somebody cheated to win.
The European Union is planning to ban animal testing for cosmetics to be by 2009. In the United States, Revlon and Avon were two of the first large companies to halt all cosmetics testing on animals. Some, on the other hand, have debated that the main ingredients in cosmetics have previously been tested on animals. Therefore, their safety is well established, which means that it's 'easier' for companies to find alternatives to test product formulations because most active ingredients have already been approved. As time, technology and technology progress, it is likely that cosmetic animal testing will either decrease or end all
Chimpanzees “used in animal tests can exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition more commonly associated with soldiers who have experienced deadly combat” (“Animal Rights”). PTSD is a serious anxiety disorder that may or may not be treated with several therapy sessions. “More than 100 million animals every year suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics tests as well as in biology lessons, medical training exercises, and curiosity-driven medical experiments at universities”(“PETA Makes Its Case Against Animal Testing”). Alternative testing methods can now be used to replace animal testing. There is absolutely no excuse for using animals for human benefits.
The use of animals in research has created a diverse range of attitudes, as some individuals support the use of animals in research and others are against it. Sometimes people do not have enough background knowledge on this topic to be involved in a discussion of animal testing. Animal testing dates back to around 400 years ago, when one of the first famous researchers William Harvey was curious to discover how blood circulates around the body. The modern era of animal testing began around 150 years ago, although the conditions were quite different; there were no painkillers as the animals suffered a great deal (Understanding Animal Research 2013).
At this very moment thousands of animals are strapped down in laboratories, being injected, poked, prodded, gassed, and even killed, for humans to be able to use the medicine we have access to today. Whether it is ibuprofen, eye drops, tums, etc. , the majority of medicine nowadays is tested extensively on innocent animals in various ways. Animal welfare acts are in place, but they do not protect animals in the ways they should. More acts and laws should be put into place to protect all animals, not just cats, dogs, monkeys, etc., but all animals. Many small rodents and reptiles are not protected by any acts or laws but they matter too. This type of testing on innocent animals have proven to be unnecessary, due to the creation of different non-animal testing methods that are much more accurate. It has been proven in many instances that the benefits are much greater with other medicinal testing, rather than testing on animals. Some of the tests that are conducted on animals, are not applicable to humans. Even though medical testing on animals is still used for many different products today, it is unethical and should be prohibited due to the lack of proven benefits to humans and the idea that medicine can be tested in other ways.
For many years there has been a debate whether animal testing should be banned or continued. Many scientists believe that a human’s life is superior to an animal’s life. Others, like me, believe that animal testing is good for medicine use and not cosmetics. In my prospective, as well as many others will agree, beauty is far less important than a living creature. For centuries now, animal testing has helped scientist develop new cures for diseases, health conditions and even the development of new technology. Animal testing has been beneficially for human beings. Believe it or not, you or someone you know might have used some medications that have been previously tested on animals.
