Cyberbullying A Growing Epidemic
Did you know bullying is a leading factor in teen’s suicide rate here in the United States? Bullying is the act of using physical force or verbal use against an individual to make them feel uneasy or bad about themselves. In today’s society we see it more than usual and what’s the response people do. Nothing they absolutely do nothing and walk away like they didn’t see anything happening. Another form of bullying that is growing and picking up pace in society is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the use of using social media or any means of communication that could be like text messages and Facebook to attack an individual behind closed doors. The aspect of cyberbullying that individuals love is the ability to remain anonymous and attack a wider range of individuals over a short time of period rather than using direct confrontation. With social media being a fingertip away we can easily send a Facebook status or a tweet out like that cyberbullying is picking up steam and more and more people are becoming a part of the problem instead on the solution. With the elimination of direct confrontation the individual doesn’t know who is attacking him or her and cannot do much in the process of putting a stop to it or even ask help to make it stop.
Due to the ever growing problem in society of cyberbullying, it makes it a violation on human rights because it affects the way a person’s right to live their life. The writers of the Human Constitution
In modern society today, freedom of speech has been a main concern to delinquents as to what they say on the web. Although, cyberbullying has turned into a major issue online that has gotten the schools’ attention and turn towards the security of their students. To accomplish nurturing their students’ safety, they have punished pupils for what they say on the Internet that is harmful in account of others. Alternatively, the Constitution believes this goes against the First Amendment and violates the students’ rights. Schools should be authorized to limit students’ online speech to decrease the matter of cyberbullying which has affected us in many ways.
Typically, the person that is doing the cyberbullying is generally a victim of bullying themselves. How is cyberbullying done? Normally, the use of electronic devices to send messages that tend to emotional hurt someone feelings. Social media can lead to many negative outcomes when communicating to others. For example, if a teenage boy responds on a girl’s photo stating she is “ugly” is considered online bullying. One popular social media site is Facebook that over millions of people use for communicating. Facebook can be a positive source to communicate with family and friends that you may not see often. Also, it can be a very negative source that a lot of people use to criticize one another. Therefore, cyberbullying occurs nationwide
Cyberbullying is an ever-growing issue that occurs daily. A survey was conducted on 80 random teenagers with the topic of Cyberbullying. The survey consisted of 15.19% of the surveyors being between ages14-16, 45.57% of the surveyed were teenagers between the ages of 16 to 18, 27.85% were between the ages of 18 to 20 and 11.39% of the surveyed were above 20. The survey results showed that 88.75% of people knew someone who has experienced cyberbullying and 58.75% have experienced cyberbullying themselves. The survey also stated that 40.51% of the 10-surveyed said that they know someone who has committed suicide based on the influences online. Out of the 58.75% who
Imagine someone you love and care about is being bullied and no one took a stand in defending or uplifting them. This horrific form of bullying takes place all around the nation through the use of cellphones, computers, and social media, that generates fear and doubt among individuals that do not have the confidence to speak up for themselves. School officials should take a stand for kids who are victims of cyber-bullying and for those who are too frightened to stand up for themselves because school officials can impact a student’s life, improve student’s behavior, and strengthen the community.
Cyberbullying cannot remain denied as an issue in schools, at home, and in neighborhood communities because research displays that bullying causes an increase in suicide and incident rates. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts and over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, with almost 7 percent already attempting it (“Bullying and Suicide,” 1). According to Bullying Statistics, over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying (Cyberbullying Statistics, 1). As an observation of these statistics, this means that almost every child will be a friend or bystander of a bullied victim, a bully, or a victim of bullying themselves if the issue does not raise awareness to be prevented. There are no benefits by harassing a student because of the way they look, smell, or nationality. no punishment to perpetrators, and fear of bullies by bystanders are the reason why cyberbullying should be prohibited in the United States of America.
Cyber bullying is going to end; schools are a big part in making this happen. Teachers need to practice proper technology use to put an end to cyberbullying. McAfee states that “...87% of youth have witnessed cyberbullying…” (“Cyberbullying Triples According to New McAfee ‘2014 Teens and the Screen study’” Para. 1) me being one of them. Not only does cyberbullying distress people it also leads to things such as depression “Ten studies examined the link between social media victimization and depression, and all of them found a connection” (Pappas Para. 10). The amount of criticism I see that people get online is unbelievable, and it devastates me that people could be so cruel so you can only imagine how they feel. Schools need to teach how to properly use technology to decrease cyberbullying. Teaching a technology class will educate students with knowledge that they will need in the real world and bring awareness to cyber bullying.
Bullying most certainly continues into high school, and in some cases even college. While the prevalence may not be as intense as it is in middle or high school, it seems clear that college students are dealing with cyber bullies as well. Up until a few years ago, it seemed that a blind eye, of sorts, was being turned to cyber bullying. The thought was that kids would be kids, and that they would ultimately get over it. It wasn’t really acknowledged as a real problem; bullying was just one of those things that everyone experienced at some point or another, and then moved on from. It wasn’t until it began to come to light that suicides were beginning to occur as a direct result of bullying, cyber bullying in most cases, that it was recognized as a real problem (Hinduja, & Patchin, 2010).
Nowadays the internet is a big part of our lives today, it has the consumed the entire world. Technology has advanced rapidly and it is the reason why our world is the very strong and stable world it is today. Specifically in our generation, it gives people a voice they never had. They can go online and be whoever they want and say whatever they want to say. Some schools feel that students have a little too much freedom online. They feel that this freedom should be limited. They feel it can cause problems for the school and other students. I feel that students should not be limited to what they have to say online because it does not affect most students and teachers, it’s not very disruptive, and free speech is a sacred right.
Cyberbullying. How often do we hear that word? Pretty often you would think considering how serious of an issue it is now a days. But no. Our society now does not emphasize enough how critical bullying has now become. Throughout the past several years many kids have been bullied. Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year, and it’s sad to say that 1 in 10 students drop out of school because of repeated bullying. Even if the statistics might be low it still doesn’t mean that it is not a serious problem that needs to be addressed in better ways.
Furthermore, in 1998, Glasser explained that students having difficulty in meeting their needs or motives are generally the ones who experience relationship problems during their adolescent years. When the gap between what a person wants and what they have increases, they feel anger and rage. These feelings often lead the adolescent to display rebellion and problematic behaviours. Another reason for the problems in relationships is the inability to show individual potential. This is where I believe teachers can play a large role, because if students’ abilities are not believed in and they are not given the chance to cope with the obstacles they encounter, adolescents often experience discipline problems; which is what cyberbullying is seen as. Therefore, it can be said that cyberbullying is related to a person being unsuccessful and a feeling of being held back in satisfying their basic needs or motives.
A couple days adrive she cathe opponent crying to school. She replicated over and over again on how ugly she was, and how he made her feel pretty. She threw up her sleeve that those were the bruises he left her
Traditional bullying has been going around forever since the 1500s. However; the the development of technology, technology has opened paths thake take bullying to a whole new level. Unfortunately, internet access to technology such as social media; has worsen the issues of bullying. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying is easier and more likely to happen because the cyberbully can be completely anonymous; making it harder to identify the bully. The reasons above show how bullying can be simple with a click of a button. Limiting access to technology would decrease the number of victims being cyberbullied because the effects of cyberbullying are dangerous, the rise of technology opens a path for more online access to cyberbullying, and each day, more and more people are being affected by cyberbullying.
We, humans, have evolved into so many things and one of them has been technology. Since technology has been created, we began to become one of its slaves, we have been so dependent on it that sometimes we pass so many hours on it that we don't even realize it. One of the items created by humans has been the internet since the internet was created our lives has been so easy and yet so hard.
“The term “cyberbullying” was first used by educator Bill Belsey in 2004 in an essay detailing the emerging threat of harassment through the use of information and communication technologies” (Cyberbullying). Kids that are surrounded by the phenomenon that is the internet have a high chance of being a subject to cyberbullying. Some kids are relatively unaffected by cyberbullying, however, there are many documented cases in which these kids are treated so maliciously that they have considered suicide. Cases of cyberbullying do not receive any special attention unless the victim is suicidal. This is unacceptable as any measures that could have prevented this are not taken until it is too late. People do not realize the damage they can cause with only their words. Cyberbullying is a serious crime that should be regulated like one. Although these are not definitive ways to stop the problem, I am here to state options that will help future kids from further attacks.
When things happen children usually do not come to an adult because of fear, but now it's time to stand up for them. Cyberbullying is one of the many forms that people use to commit serious crimes, that get looked past. Cyberbullying is not okay, neither is any way used to hurt someone no matter the circumstances. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, usually by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. Social Media was created to show the world how many other are living their life, through positivity. Sometimes, you can’t just “log off” when cyber bullying is happening. When you cyberbully there will be consequences such as going to jail or getting a fine, sometimes both.
