The goal of this study was to determine if a self-management program had any impact on social participation with clients that had arthritis. The clients participated in a 6-week Self-Help Program by the Arthritis Foundation. It analyzed one pretest and 2 posttest surveys. The program included sections on understanding aches and pains, self-management plan, how to stay healthy, problem solving, and medical resources. The results suggested that there might be a potential connection linking self-efficacy, self-management programs, and social participation together. The participants were more willing to interact with family and friends, engage in social gatherings, and resume former engagements following the implementation of the program. This study also assumes that the participants were able to generate quality recommendations that would be beneficial for changing the program. The study was directed towards older adults and may not be generalizable to other age populations. This article is a good source because it is found in a peer-reviewed journal that cited many different sources. This study is potentially very useful when considering setting up a community based-program because it recorded what participants wanted in a program and how their recommendations could be incorporated. Tailoring the programs will make them more worthwhile for participants to attend, allow the facility to sustain the program, and increase the effectiveness of the classes. The data collected also highlighted how cultural differences changed the recommendations they had to improve the program, which need to be taken into consideration when developing a self-management
