The course AS 198 “Academic Strategies for Excellence” has taught me many ways to be successful in my academic career, and life as well. I’ve learned characteristics of successful and struggling students. The mindset a person has to possess in order to achieve and accomplish tasks. Another important thing I learned is which Inner Voice I should listen to, in order to be successful. The assignments that I completed in the course also contributed to my growth, and development as a person. In the course the class went over the characteristics of successful students and struggling students. The first thing of a successful student that influenced me, was accepting personal responsibility. A person has to see themselves as the cause their outcomes and experiences. If someone sees themselves as a victim, success most likely will never come to them. Employing interdependence I learned is another important characteristic of a successful student. In college a person has to build mutually supportive relationships to help them achieve their goals. People who refuse assistance from others who could help most likely will have a difficult time achieving success. The most important thing I learned of a successful student was self-management. A person has to plan and manage their time wisely …show more content…
A person with a creator mindset believes that their choices create the outcomes, and experiences of their lives. Someone with a Victim mindset believes that external forces determine their outcomes and experiences of their lives. People with Creator mindsets seek solutions, take action, and try new things. Victim mindset’s blame, complain, make excuses, and repeat this behavior. Creator mindsets often achieve their goals. Victim mindsets seldom achieve goals. The key ingredient of which mindset a person has is choice. The choices a person makes has a lot of influence from which Inner Voice a person listens
Reading the article Lake and von Baeyer (2005) “Tips for Successful Students”, I realize that most characteristics are necessary for one to succeed as a student in any area of life. For example, one must ask questions and take notes in order to interact with the professor and further their knowledge in a particular subject. These two skills coincide together along with the initiative to achieve a certain stardom. One aspect of learning is never lonesome, though it is possible to be additionally gifted in one region over another.
During my high school years, I can confidently say I have excelled in my academic endeavours. This success is partially due to my desire to learn. I am always intrigued by the lessons and concepts that are at the core of assigned work. My passion for learning has facilitated my learning process; because I am usually interested in the material that is being taught, my ability to retain and understand information is heightened. My academic success is also due to my drive to do the best I can. Since grade nine, I have demanded excellence from myself in all academic subjects. I strived to perform to the best of my abilities in the first high school years so that I would adopt that habit early and take it with me through the senior high school years. Finally, my academic excellence
Read Lake and von Baeyer's article, “Tips for Successful Students." Also, review the characteristics of a successful student as explained in the lecture. As you consider these, which is your strongest characteristic? Why? How will this characteristic help you to become a successful student in your program of study?
I have listed below some great tips for students to be successful while in college, please feel free to implement them as you feel needed:
I have learned I will study harder way more, ask my professor and classmates any questions (or things) I don’t understand in the class, and taking advantage of the professor’s office hours. Doing these things will help me achieve academic success in graduate school and in student affairs. This has shown through how I changed my study habits to be successful and to majors that I am passionate about. I have always love helping people, being mentors, and teaching people (and students) about how to become better leaders and improving their
Before my admission to Houston Community College, I was lost on how to succeed in my courses. However, my admission to this institute exposed me to different courses which educated me on different lessons on how not only to survive in college, but also how to succeed in my classwork. There are two main lessons that I wish to pass on to other students on how they can flourish in their courses.
The areas that were the strongest for me on the College Student Inventory was, Math and Science, Attitude Towards Educators, Family Emotional Support, Sense of Financial Security and Academic Assistance. Now the math and science goes along with the attitude toward educators. Both of these were high because my mom was my math teacher and I respected all my teachers. I saw firsthand all the crap they got and stuff students tried on them. I just did what I was told and got along great with my teachers. If they respected me, I respected them back, I believe respect is just like a two way street. Family Support and Financial Security also go together for me. My parents taught me to be tight and careful with my money. Always plan for if something happens you will be fine and can take it and not affect you to bad. Also the biggest thing is not to stretch myself out with loans and have showed me to save up and pay cash and how much you will pay in interest. Lastly is the Academic assistance,
Success in college requires one to identify key aspects of personal responsibility, understand the relationship between personal responsibility and college success, and establish a specific plan to follow that will ensure he or she incorporates the various elements of personal responsibility in every facet of his or her college experience.
This course activity is your opportunity to define the foundation on which you’ll build improvements in study habits, keeping in mind the goals you set and your definition of success.
Although many people will have different opinions on how to achieve personal success in college and consequently increase student retention, there are effective strategies that are proven to aid in achieving these goals.
Being a successful student may involve some of the characteristics such as: organization, time, studying, and believing you can achieve.
A practical virtue that I feel is very important for everyone to exemplify especially students is that of ambition. For students this virtue can be directly applied to their academic pursuits. It’s important for students to be committed and passionate about their studies. Though, ambition can quickly be tilted off of its perch on the golden mean. If a student is too ambitious and tends to have perfectionist like qualities it becomes much easier for that student to get frustrated quickly when he begins to struggles. Once this strong sense of frustration kicks in the odds of this students decided to give up are immediately heightened. This is an unhealthy amount of pressure to put on oneself, and this mentality can be very difficult to detach from once you have sank into its clutches. On the other hand if a student is content with passing with the minimum requirements, then it is quite likely that that student will not retain much of the information that was covered in his class. It is important for a student to be driven in their pursuit of knowledge, but they must find the proper level of ambition to make sure they will have the highest chance of succeeding.
To become a success in life, we all need to learn to become a good student in every aspect of life. Becoming a good student takes much work and self-discipline. There are many ways that a student can stand out from the rest of the class. These good students are distinguished by their attitude, intellectual skills, consciousness, and achievement.
Victims, unlike creators who unremittingly ponder alternatives which lead in the upshot they wish, attempt to find blame for negative, unpleasant situations and obstacles that occur in their lives. Some people become victims in their environment when rather than by accepting personal responsibility, gaining self-awareness and believing in themselves, they accept the victim role of trusting that outer forces decide the outcomes and experiences of their lives. Referring to victims, On Course states, “make decisions carelessly, letting the future happen by chance rather than by choice” (22). Victims do not have strategies, no visualization of the life they want, and no motivation to design the future they desire. Creators seeks ways to remain motivated, adapts to situations and they try to prevent the situation from occurring again. Creators control the route that they want their life to end up being on; they do not allow life to control them or their future.
