The hunting of animals has been a tradition of humans through out history. We cannot travel back in time to prove this but we do have evidence to support it. The leaders and wealthy class of ancient societies commissioned artists to depict their stories. Some artist depicted a hunting tradition to preserve the memory of the hunt. Two examples of this are Assurnasirpal II Killing Lions and Ti Watching a Hippopotamus Hunt.
The Assurnasirpal II Killing Lions work was made around 870 BCE. It shows king Assurnasirpal riding in a chariot. He is being pulled by two horses and the driver of the chariot is whipping them. The horses are trampling on a dead lion. Assurnasirpal is standing up with a bow in his hand and he is rendered in composite pose. He is shooting a lion chasing the chariot. The lion has three arrows in it as it is pouncing on the chariot. Behind this lion is two soldiers with their shield raised in the air. They both have sword and will stop the lion if it gets too close to the king. This picture is full of both life and action. This brings emotion into the viewer when they see the lion falling and the king being so dominant.
The Ti Watching a Hippopotamus Hunt was made around 2,400 BCE. The scene is set on a body of water.

The central figure, is in composite pose and the largest on the hierarchic scale. These works were created thousands of years apart but their meanings are similar. Both of these works record the hunting of animals. However, reason behind hunting the animals is different. Assurnasirpal is hunting the lions for sport and to prove he is superior to them. Ti is commanding his men to hunt the hippopotamus because they are pest to the land and it was his job to get rid of them. The viewing place for these pieces are also completely different. Assurnasirpal has his piece placed in his palace for every one to see. In contrast, Ti has his piece placed in his tomb as more of a religious
Hunting is a common activity all around the world, and if performed properly, can have many benefits to us and the rest of the planet. The art of hunting has been around since the beginning of time. Living off of the land used to be a necessity across the world, until the mass production of food came along. In America, people do not usually need to hunt to survive. However, the population of animal species needs to be controlled. Too many of one type of animal can cause a drastic change to any ecosystem. Food supplies decline quickly, leaving many animals without food. Hunting can help keep the population of a group of animals at a good number, making the lives of the other
Hunting is something we've done since we've been on this planet. We used to do it out of necessity, but in the modern world we do it for many other reasons. As technology has increased, we have developed different methods of hunting. These methods have carried over to today, but two have prevailed: bowhunting and rifle hunting. These methods are both hunting--obviously--but they're different in almost every other sense. Bowhunting and rifle hunting are different based on the weapon used, the way you hunt, and your connection with the animal and the land around it; however, the same in the way the respective methods bring people together.
Hunting is a part of our culture and has been all throughout history. “Our prehistoric ancestors were hunters. To them, animals were as sacred as life itself. A good hunt assured survival.” (National Shooting Sports Foundation) . If our ancestors didn’t hunt, then they didn’t live. They relied on it for the survival of their families.
There are still people today who do hunt as their main source of food. A lot of these people choose to hunt for their own meat vs. buying it because they feel it is fresher. Also, because they know where the food comes from. These people who hunt for their own food also often also use the fur for
Hunting has been around for as long as people have been on this earth and if that were taken away completely some people would lose that sense of nature to hunt. Hunting is people who kill animals for food, clothing, or sport. In 2011 13.7 million people, 6% of the U.S. population 16 years old and older, hunted. Big game like elk, deer and wild
“For some, hunting is a hobby for me it is a passion” by picgran. People should understand hunting because it's been in the world for over centuries. If you love to have your blood pumping with adrenaline you should hunt. Archaeologists have unearthed what could be the earliest evidence of ancient human ancestors hunting and scavenging meat. Animal bones and thousands of stone tools used by ancient hominins suggest that early human ancestors were butchering and scavenging animals at least 2 million years ago.
The hunters families depended on them for survival, they hunted animals and gathered wild plants for their sustenance (Time Maps). People not just acquired meat from the animals but they used the whole carcass. The animal’s pelt (or hide) was used for clothing or blankets, and the bones could be manipulated into a multitude of different tools, such as, shovels, needles, musical instruments, fish hooks, spoons, and knives. Food and tools were the two major driving factors behind hunting; an argument could be made that they killed for protection. That a dangerous animal was endangering the group, but that animal would just turn into food and
The Horus Statue of Nectanebo II and the Human-headed winged lion, also known as the Lamassu, are two pieces of art that are very different yet similar with each other in composition, representation, function, and style. Although they were created at two different points in history, the artists thought about and created the two art works in similar fashion.
My second piece I want to tell you about is the Sphinx of Amenhotep III. This piece was made sometime between 2000-1000 B.C. The artist from this piece is unknown but it is believed that the Sphinx of Amenhotep III is a model of a temple. It is only about 9 7/8 inches in length, 5 1/4 inches in width and 5 1/4 inches tall. Amenhotep III had many statues completed of him and during that age Amenhotep built many temples and other chapels. By the looks of it, it just looks like a giant doorstopper. But this artifact has great symbolism. The sphinx puts two things together and offers them to the gods, and that would be protective power of the lion with the royal function. It’s a lion’s body but transforms to human arms and hands. It has about
Even up today human are still hunting human. You might be shock but it is true and actually you even might think its normal for what some will say. In this story The most Dangerous game by Richard Connell; the main character is Rainsford. Rainsford was really careless for the animal and General Zaroff hunts human and you might of felt discussed. But people so hunt animal for food and people like in war, attacts, and ect.
Both Etruscan and Roman tomb sculpture function to memorialize the departed allowing them to move on from the world of the living and seeks to comfort those who have lost the ones they love. The two societies have differing practices in regards to death and therefore sculptures concerning the subject are somewhat different with a few identifiable similarities. While both societies seek to comfort the living and commemorate the dead this is achieved through different approaches. The Etruscan Sarcophagus with reclining couple from Cerveteri, Italy and the Mummy of Artemidorus from Roman Egypt are two examples of contrasting representations of the dead. When analyzing tomb sculpture one of the main questions is whether the work adapts a retrospective approach (presentation of the deceased as they were in life) or a prospective one (the viewpoint of looking forward to life beyond the grave). While the Etruscan sarcophagus gives a more retrospective memorialization through the depiction of the couple in a state of regularity the Roman Mummy of Artemidorus presents a more prospective approach concerning the deceased through the emphasis of funerary practices.
Hunting has been around ever since man has. It used to be the way people survived. Even though we have supermarkets nowadays, and we don't need to hunt to survive, it should still be allowed. I'm not saying that everybody should hunt, I am simply saying that if you want to hunt, you should have that option. Wild game meat tastes better, and it is better for you because it does not have any of the additives you would find in the meat you buy from the supermarket.
The British Museum in London holds many ancient pieces of art. There are so many galleries and exhibits inside the museum that several pieces do not get the attention they deserve. One such piece resides in the Assyrian exhibit inside the museum. It is a collection of three alabaster panels that act as registers of a narrative story. The expertly carved reliefs illustrate the great lion hunt performed by an Assyrian king in an arena. So much emotion is portrayed in the brutal imagery of the lion hunt. These great alabaster slabs once resided in an Assyrian palace in present day Nineveh. The reliefs were excavated in the 1840’s by Hormuzd Rassam, employed by Austen Henry Layard of the British Museum. Rassum found the palace by secretly digging at night because the site was originally claimed by French archeologist Victor Place. Since the excavation, the lion hunt reliefs have been displayed in the British Museum. The lion hunt reliefs features so many qualities ranging from historical to artistic. In this report the topic of why the reliefs were made, how they represented the king, the symbolism of the lion, and artistic prowess of the piece will be exposed.
hunters for years. It wasn't until they took a beast of the wild and tamed it
Humans have been hunting on this planet for over two million years. Our ancestors used complex hunting techniques to ambush and kill antelopes, gazelles, and other large animals dated back to times before Christ. People all around the world still carry on the tradition, but the view on hunting is not the same as it was back then. The world is so industrialized, and people think hunting is cruel and useless because you can buy meat at grocery stores. But in reality, it is the reason the wildlife they see are not extinct. Harvesting game not only benefits the hunter with the meat, but also the land, the wildlife, and controls the game population; therefore, without it wildlife would starve, and land would not be managed.
