I completed my associate degree last year, and as I am getting closer to completing my bachelor’s degree, as I look ahead I can see that light at the end of the tunnel. This journey has been very long, and at times I have felt frustrated and afraid, but I have learned to conquer my fears. Completing college is essential if I want to be successful and competitive in today’s world. Years ago I never thought this day would ever come. My current goal is to complete my B.S. degree in Community and Human Services with a concentration in Human Services. I am currently volunteering at an organization that helps to keep families from becoming homeless. Everything I have learned so far here at Empire State College has been tremendously helpful. It was interesting to learn about the structures of the fundamental concepts of biology, chemistry, and the physics of food preparation. I could finally explain to the children why frying foods in oil is called dry-heat method. I also took a course in Art & Sustainability. In this course I learned how to examine visual works of art that connected to our natural environment. This course also helped me to develop an appreciation for the human imagination and to develop an appreciation for art as personal expression and environmental awareness. Art class with the children has never been the same, I have helped the children create works of art using materials they recycled at home. The children and I have both become more aware of the earth around us and the importance of making our own contributions for a cleaner tomorrow. The course that I have taken that has impacted me the most has been Gay and Lesbian in American Culture. I was amazed to see this course amongst the list of courses. This course helped me to understand the role of sexual identity and the role of stereotypes in American culture. This is the course that really made me understand that education opens up the world around us. Education allows us to view the world from a different …show more content…
Many people even proceeded to tell me that I would not be getting a real education and I would just be given a diploma. Today I say to those people Empire State College does not give away A’s you have to put the work in to earn them. I can honestly say that my decision to complete my education here at Empire State College is the best one I have ever made. Although the learning method is not traditional, it is a perfect fit for those of us who need the flexibility to juggle taking care of our families, a job and completing our studies. Although my current goal is to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Community and Human Service Studies it is my desire to eventually continue my studies and obtain a Master’s
At the young age of eighteen, fresh out of high school, I was confused and felt no direction in what exactly I wanted to do or be when I “grew-up”. I decided to enroll at my local community college in the liberal arts program to see what
To accomplish anything in life, you must set goals. These goals must be realistic and achievable. Two years ago, I was at a point in my life that I never believed I would see. I was finally at my associate’s degree graduation day. Becoming at teen mom at 17, college had never even crossed my mind. This was a moment in my life where I was able to not be your average teen mom statistic. Continuing to better my life and my daughter’s I set a new goal after graduation to achieve my bachelor’s degree. After speaking with UMUC counselors, I decided to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Social Science with a minor in Emergency Management. Currently, I am in my final two classes at UMUC with a scheduled graduation date of May 15.
It has taken a few years to earn a two-year degree, but that’s how it goes for people in my shoes. I have to work a full-time job to afford to live and keep myself in school. For this current chapter in my life, it has been the right path. It has allowed me to do things I never thought possible. I have been a member of the honors college for years, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Student Government, and Psi Beta. Each one of these organizations have given me the tools needed to understand my dream. I have seen the scars that others carry inside themselves, I have seen the weight they put on their shoulders. I have been there to help guide them, to help teach them how to listen and understand not only themselves, but the dreams they seek.
As I began studying here at Seattle University, I was aware of my career goals, yet I did not know the academic path that would lead me to them. My career goals were not focused towards a specific discipline, as all I intended to pursue was a career that would contribute to the improvement of my native Hawaiian community. As the school year progressed, I joined student organizations such as hall council and gained leadership positions. In hall council, we were responsible for addressing the needs and desires of our fellow student residents in order to unify our dorm hall community. This experience allowed me to realize that I enjoy fulfilling the needs of others and contributing to the community. Being a part of hall council also reminded me
In December of 2004, I graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology. In retrospect, I was just happy to graduate. I was a first generation college graduate, who had the foresight to complete my
There are three major categories of degree available for a post-secondary student. Which are Associate, Bachelors, and Masters all three of these are degrees you can fulfilled your education and career in? Most of the time it takes about 2-8 years to get depending on the degree and study field in interest.
In Megan Garber’s article, entitled “The (Booze-Infused, Bikini-Clad) Values of The Bachelor,” she examines many of the core traditions of the popular reality show. The Bachelor, and its corresponding The Bachelorette, both include a group of contestants vying for the love of the Bachelor or the Bachelorette, ultimately ended in an engagement between the chosen pair. This show’s depiction of romance and dating play a role in its long-lasting popularity, as well as present common representations of such relationships among the viewers. Garber’s article describes these reflections seen in The Bachelor, including the downplay upon people’s lives outside of the show, the emphasis on family values, and the consistent matchmaking organization of
Evergreen summers to crisp, ivory winters with a community dedicated in promoting diversity in thought is the type of environment rare on college campuses in our modern age, but one I respect, and have found prevalent at Northwestern. With the BA/BS dual-degree program, not only will I be able to achieve academic success in biomedical engineering as I’ve wished for, but also be able to sustain my artistic pursuits, such as drawing and creative writing, and bloom into a more well-rounded student; being given the opportunity to double major in biomedical engineering and English, with an emphasis in writing, allows me to fuse both of my preoccupations into a singular pathway that, though seemingly disparate, cohesively merges through the need
The Post-Secondary unit was probably the most helpful unit out of all my high school career. Even though I already had a basic plan for my future, I learned a lot of new, valuable information throughout this unit. I realized how different college is from high school because of the amount of time we spend in class and on homework. I’m excited for the shorter class times and the extended times for myself to study because I tend to learn more that way. Since I decided that I want to go into Pharmacy at STLCOP, I researched the admission requirements. The college requires an essay which I would have needed to start soon, but I know I would procrastinate until the last minute. This unit required me to write an essay for a college, therefore, it
I am a twenty-one year old male, double majoring in Political science and environmental science with a triple minor in leadership studies, nonprofit management, and English. I run a student organization here on campus that functions similar to a low-functioning alcoholic… meaning, it doesn’t. I haven’t the foggiest about what I want to do with myself after college (if I ever get there), but all I’ve ever known is that I want to be a part of something that develops the quality of life for all walks of
I’ve learned a lot of useful tips from this semester in ENG 201. English has never been my strong suit nor has it been my favorite class. However this college course has changed my point of view of the subject. Prior coming into college I viewed English as a useless class because I’ve already knew the basics: how to talk, read and write essays. Today I view English as an important class. It helped me in other courses that involved writing, such as World Civilization and Communications, because it allowed me to practice my skills. In my world civilization exams I had to write essays. This course helped me write an impactful essay. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that almost all of my exam scores were in the 90s, usually I do poorly in the
Having a Bachelor’s, in addition to my years of experience, makes me eligible to be promoted to an Operations Manager, or a Director at my current job. I can also be a Billing Manager at a hospital. All of which are careers I am interested in. The final plan in my academic future is to earn my Master’s Degree in Social Work. After completion of my Master’s, I can pursue the career of my dreams, a Hospice Social Worker.
When I graduated from high school, I was admitted at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I enrolled in the School of Business. My major was Accounting. I did so to please my parents and what I thought would be the best fit. I was not very happy, and I must confess that I was bored to death. After two years of studying something that I did not like, I changed my focus to School of Social Work. I was taking elective classes in Social Work/Mental Health Counseling and realize that this field held my interest and really represented how I viewed myself and the world. I was out from College for 5 years. Working with the Department of Social Services and numerous nonprofit organizations. For the last 5 years I have been working as a Social Worker for Department of Social Service Child Protective Service Investigator. I actual love my job because it is customer (client) oriented and I got to practice my counseling skills indirectly and directly with my clients I encounter on an daily
My personal path which has led me to becoming a certified teacher is anything but conventional. I have adorned numerous hats throughout my life. I have been a student; a business owner; a wife; a mother and most recently a substitute teacher. Throughout the various stages of my life thus far, one very prominent aspect has always been present. I have this overwhelming innate desire for learning and helping others. My educational path has been bombarded with numerous obstacles and road blocks over the past two decades. Through perseverance, and pure stubbornness, I completed my bachelor’s degree in December of 2014. It wasn’t in a specific specialty field of my dreams. In fact, it was a B.S. in General Studies. This degree allowed three minors of Business, Sociology and Family and Consumer Science. This degree, although labeled “General”, was anything but that. This accomplishment was spectacular, and above all, it was all mine. Soon after graduating, I quickly became overwhelmed with the repeated question of, “What are you going to do now?” “Hmm…let’s see. I don’t really know yet.” This would also be my repeated response.
The classes I took as a senior extraordinarily impacted my life. The teachers in my environmental class and my English class focused on helping us find what we wanted to major in. In the beginning of the year, I wrote a research paper on the current innovations developed to clean oil spills. Oil spills have significant damage to ecosystems and wildlife. I enjoyed this assignment because it was the first topic that I discussed in school that dealt with fixing an environmental problem. My Environmental class had an even greater influence on me. It left me better educated and more interested in the topic. One of the greatest impacts I had because of this class was a trip we took at the end of the year.
