Baroque Era Essay

The Italian Renaissance was one of the most colorful, vital, and exciting times in history. Renaissance eventually comes from the French word "Renaistre," meaning "to be born again." The Renaissance was a revival or a rebirth of cultural awareness and learning among art, law, language, literature, philosophy, science, and mathematics. This period took place between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Renaissance in Italy flourished in the 15th century and spread throughout most of Europe in the 16th century.

This painting is a portrait of an old woman who is sitting on a chair while facing to the left. She is wearing a yellow flower dress with a beige jacket while sitting in an empty room. Her beauty is illustrated by her curly, gray hair and also her wrinkled face, neck, and hands. These details is what makes her look real and pure. I like how detailed it is because it reminds me of my grandmothers.

Baroque and High Renaissance are two very important periods in art history, during that time a lot of different forms of art were created which include architecture, painting, and music. Baroque is just another word for having flashy symmetrical decoration. It’s a style that started around the 1600s in Italy and with its popularity it quickly spread around Europe. High Renaissance artist displaces the importance of draftsmanship, structured, and often-centralized compositions. Many artists quickly rise to stardom during these eras. This paper compares and contrasts these two art periods with the works created by great artists such as Marcantonio Franceschini who lived during the Baroque period and Mariotto Albertinelli who lived during the High Renaissance period.

"Francois Boucher painted The Toilet of Venus. This painting was custom-made for Madame de Pompadour as part of the decoration for her cabinet de toilette at the Chateau de Bellevue, which was one of the residences she shared with King Louis XV. In the painting there are cupids and doves which are attributes of Venus as the goddess of Love. The flowers allude to her role as patroness of gardens and the pearls reflect her mysterious birth from the sea. Francois made the painting during the Rococo Style period. As a painter of nudes, Boucher had no equal in his generation. "

The era known as the Baroque period includes the seventeenth and most of the eighteenth centuries in Europe. The Baroque style was a style in which the art and artists of the time focused upon details and intricate designs. Their art often appeals to the mind by way of the heart. During this time the portraits began to portray modern life, and artists turned their backs on classical tradition. Much of the art shows great energy and feeling, and a dramatic use of light, scale, and balance (Preble 302). Buildings were more elaborate and ornately decorated. THE BAROQUE AGE Social and Cultural Background      Baroque is a term borrowed from the visual arts and one that is used in many different senses. The Baroque Era applies to the years between 1600 and 1750. The most famous composers of this time were Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Teleman.      Politically it was an age of magnificent absolute Monarch’s.

The style was highly decorative and tended to use light pastel colours. The designs were typically asymmetrical and featured a lot of gold. The word is known as a combination of the French for ‘stone’ and ‘shell’. Rococo art consisted of elaborate and over the top designs that took a more humorous and light-hearted approach to the arts in comparison to other movements at the time. Rococo was designed to cover an entire room; meaning that all the ornaments and furniture blended together to create a luxurious environment. Rococo is believed to be a product Influenced by interior design when it was actually inspired by Baroque architecture in Europe at the time. Many architects were asked by Bishops and Princes to design and build churches of great heights in the Rococo style. It was by the end of Louis XV’s reign that Bolder and richer styles were giving way to the lighter and softer Rococo designs. The style really started to gain interest in France in the 1730’s when the trend was picked up by painters and sculptures, which is seen in the work of French painters such as Antoine Watteau and François Boucher. It was by this point an art form loved by many and even became known as the ‘’French Taste’’ in Britain. The trend came to Britain more so through interiors and silverwork. Thomas Chippendale was famous for creating wooden furniture that merged this newly found love for Rococo with his already existing eye for design. Many said that

The aristocracy is rich and powerful during the Baroque period. It is called " age of absolutism" because of the high power of the aristocracy. They use luxury entertainments to show their power. On the other hand, the religious institutions, which is divided into Catholic and Protestant, also compete their power with their baroque style in churches. And the middle-class also distribute the development of Baroque style as well. And because its ability of influence the development of baroque style, a style that represent luxury, it shows that the social status of the middle class is rising.

The Baroque Period (1600-1750) was mainly a period of newly discovered ideas. From major new innovations in science, to vivid changes in geography, people were exploring more of the world around them. The music of the baroque period was just as extreme as the new changes. Newly recognized composers such as Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Monteverdi were writing entirely new musical ideas and giving a chance for new voices to be heard that were normally not thought of sounds. Their musical legacy is still recognized today, and is a treasured discovery of outstanding compositions being reiterated with every performance of them.

At this time last year, I would have considered all music before the 20th century to be classical. However, after taking a Dual Credit Music Appreciation course, I realized that “old” music cannot simply be grouped into a single category. There are so many differences that I had no idea existed. Throughout the years, music has changed and evolved, meeting the needs of listeners and performers. Different composers have been catalysts in this change as they have developed new styles and genres. Even though the classical period is directly subsequent of the baroque period, baroque and classical music have countless different qualities and characteristics.

Art can be classified into different eras by their similar and distinguishing subjects and methods. They show the progression and timeline for different standards of art and the point of views and values for the people of the time. For example, the Renaissance art period, was an art period in which religious authority figures sought to beautify their cities and palaces with artworks detailing religious themes. Renaissance art was also commissioned by wealthy bankers, and churches. What is usually seen in artworks of the time are elegant and detail-oriented work influencing the sense perception of what one visualizes of the time period to be as, grand and sophisticated. They represent the high esteem that was held by the commissioners of

Baroque Period, during which a few of the greatest composers on this planet were born, brought classical music onto a whole new level. The word “Baroque”, which came from the Portuguese for “the imperfect pearl”, implies strange, extravagant and overblown. Toccata, fugue, chorale, ortario, and the concerto Grosso, all of these special musical forms were created and represent this period. The six main characteristics: increased emotional expression, contrast, use of basso continuo, continued harmonic development, use of ornament, and the emphasis of improvisation, molded the unique style of music of the Baroque period.
